MSU Recruiting vs. UM and Conference.

  • SpartanRocky said...

I look it at this way: if MSU can hold it's own vs. the rest of the division/conf. they'll be in great shape to win the division, win or lose to UM.

Do i sound like an arrogant Michigan fan if i say, if Michigan can hold it's own vs. the rest of the division/conf. they'll be in great shape to win or lose to tOSU.

Just throwing it out there that you expecting to beat Nebraska, Iowa... Is no different than us expecting to beat MSU.

Its a lot ridiculous... but its still a good discussion on sports... a rare side-step from the usual off-season sports chatter.

I think the nutshell here is Michigan is going to recruit well - even under RR, they still pulled in highly ranked classes. The difference is how MSU looks now compared to 10 years ago. I don't think even the dumbest UM fan can say that MSU hasn't improved their depth and talent in that time.

You might want to ammend that last statement a little. You would be supprised at what dumb um fans say...

I'm not expecting to beat Nebraska/Iowa every year, but enough to make a run at the division title on a semi-regular basis. The years MSU gets UM at home are the same ones where State plays @Nebraska and @Iowa. That chances of slipping up against one of those 2 on the road are pretty reasonable.

And what you're saying is exactly correct. Beat everyone else but tOSU and it won't matter; you'll have locked up the division. Same concept.

It really feels that Iowa's on their way down. I don't know what to do about Nebraska.

As I said before, I don't see either MSU or UM ripping off 4-5 straight against the other after MSU's current streak expires. The original point of this thread was to show that MSU's talent RELATIVE to UM's has increased compared to MSU's prior historical levels. Using the 1-10 scale, in the mid-2000s, MSU's talent was around a 3-4, definitely below average. UM's was a 9-9.5. I'd say UM's, for this season, is probably an 8, with it moving back to that 9-9.5 range soon. However, MSU's talent is more in the 6.5-7 range now.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I think the difference is the "if". The arrogant UofM fans assume that they are going to beat MSU now that they are recruiting back to normal simply because that's what has happened when UofM was recruiting like this before. It doesn't, however, take into account the differences in the MSU program between now and what they remember. MSU doesn't go back to being "bad" because Michigan is improved. It's just one game.

Great! I hope they take the time to look at the data and realize what the point is: UM is recruiting about as well as they always do, but maybe a little bit behind where Lloyd Carr's classes were. MSU is recruiting better than MSU ever has.

UM's classes under Carr (and even RichRod) used to average around 0.2 or 0.3 higher than MSU's classes. The last four years, that gap is down to around 0.05 or 0.1

It is too bad they probably won't take the time to actually look at the data.

What classes do give to Richrod and which ones do give to Carr and Hoke?

I would say 2008 would be Carr's last class, 2009,2010, and 2011 to Richrod. 2012 to Hoke's first full year.

With just a couple exceptions in the 2008 and 2011 classes, you are probably correct.

Yep. 2008 was closed out by RichRod, 2011 was closed out by Hoke. In both cases, the majority of the work was completed by the previous staffs.
