Agreed, it's great to smack down the delusional Walverines, it's also great to see them disappear when they realize they are losing the argument.

This whole thread was a welcome addition to my lunch hour today. Still laughing at some of the comments.

You also run the risk of too many cooks spoiling the soup wink_msu

Van Bergen led UM in sacks and TFL (5.5 and 12.5). That's pretty good production. Not great, but pretty good. You're using SDEs as DTs and your WDE is now a SDE. Is Campbell expected to start at NT?

My money is on the DL struggling a bit early in the year, especially as 1st year starters Clark/Beyer get used to playing a full 60+ snaps/game, as well as Black adjusting to play on the interior. There's a question at NT, as we don't know what to expect from Campbell. I think Roh should have a strong year, though it'll be different for him going up against more double-teams as the SDE. Both he and Campbell could have benefited from a RS year, because if both were coming back in '13, I'd really like UM's DL a lot.

I think it will be an interesting unit to watch. i dont think they will be as good as UM fans think they will or as bad as MSU fans think either. Wheatley made a good point about UM having 3 DL coaches by trade on staff with Hoke, Mattison and Montgomery. Dantonio has the same sort of advantage with DBs, given the secondary being his coaching background. Their DL sort of came out of no where last year with even a walkon starting and looking good. I suspect they will always have a servicable unit with their coaching staff.. I have looked at their depth chart and they do have some young 4 star talents waiting in the wings. (Ash, Wilkens,Washington, Beyer) plus an incoming 5 star Pipkins who will probably contribute in 2012. The back 7 looks pretty solid with all 7 starters returning plus their nickel and actually has some depth now. The back up safeties Furman and Robinson have both cleared their legal troubles. On paper UM looks like a top 3 or 4 B1G defense if you are looking at it objectively. They probably wont be starting any frosh this year for the first time in a few years.

Do me a favor. Check out some videos on the MSU defensive backfield circa 2009.

Get back to me on your theory that Hoke, Mattison, and the other choad being DL coaches will make a difference.

  • To me it is all about shoelaces and the run game. Like many pointed out: UM led the B1G on the ground and the defense was protected by not being on the field. Many teams knew they were going to run he ball but still couldn't stop them. MSU could. Unless he somehow learns how to pass the ball accurately I don't see it changing much.

Also Rich Rod did a number on UM. They have a lot gaps as far as experience because of all of the defections. They have a lot of talent but It it is still young.

Remains to be seen but with Alabama on the schedule I expect them to start 0-1. We will see how they respond.

    I'm down to actually discuss this . . .

You're leaving out a minor detail that tilts these towards MSU's favor. Michigan State played against both Wisconsin and Michigan this season; the top 2 offenses in the conference. Michigan played neither. The common refrain from UM fans is that MSU also played IU. This is true, but UM played Purdue and Illinois. More on that in a second.

You also left out Red Zone D; MSU was #1 in the conf at 72% conversion allowed, while UM was 3rd, 77.3% allowed. UM ended the year ranked #3 nationally in RZ D, so I don't think MSU is the only team who beefed up their stats with the non-conf. I also noticed you didn't even list Big 10 Scoring D: MSU was #2 at 17.6 PPG while UM was at 19.4.

Here are the scoring and total O averages of MSU's 8 Big 10 opponents (counting Wisky only once, since the B1G statistics only count 8 games), as compared to UM's:

    Big 10 Scoring O's faced:

    MSU: 26.9625 ppg

    UM: 23.825 ppg

    Big 10 Total O's faced:

    MSU: 371.675 ypg

    UM: 349.6 ypg

So, on average, MSU faced scoring O's averaging 3 more ppg and 22 YPG. MSU's Scoring D was just under 2 points/game BETTER than UM's despite facing offenses that scored, on average, 3 points/game more. The total D was just 13 yards/game behind UM's, despite facing total Os averaging 22 ypg more.

I'll take it a step further, because UM's rushing D was definitely over-rated. UM's rush D averaged 2.5 yards/game less than MSU's, 115.6 ypg to 118.1 ypg. That's pretty good, till you realize that UM faced 74 fewer rushing attempts than MSU in conf. play (248 compared to 322), and gave up nearly a yard/carry more than MSU (3.7 ypc compared to MSU's 2.9).

Just for fun . . . average rush O's faced:

MSU: 188.775 ypg on the ground

UM: 161.25 ypg on the ground

Michigan missed the top 2 rushing O's (Wisky at 247 and UM at 228), as well as #s 5 and 6 (PSU and IU). UM did face the entire bottom half of the rush O's: Northwestern, IL, Purdue, Minnesota, Iowa and MSU

    Knowledge. Bang.

They fared very well in the Sugar bowl, they won a BCS bowl and finsihed with the best record of any Big Ten team.

Which means nothing. You keep telling yourself that the Sugar Bowl was a great win and maybe you will believe it. BCS means nothing(to B1G teams) unless it is the Rose Bowl or NC game.

Georgia was a FAR superior team to VT and it's not even close.

The reports on Campbell are very positive but wil see, with the coaching in place he could be a surprise. Quinton Washington and Richard Ash are also in line for some playing time at DT and they are huge space eaters at well over 300 pounds each.

The reports from Munich were very positive in 1938.

and only a bullshit "unnecessary roughness" personal foul on Linthicum in 2010 prevented that game from being 41-17 as it should have been. one of the most egregiously horrible calls in MSU history, and that's saying something. He was flagged for "blocking" lol

Way to leave off your non-conference. Total yards:

    WMU - 279 (3 quarters) ND - 513 EMU - 236 SDST - 376

No kidding. He only left those numbers off because, if he had included them, his stats would be skewed.

And then he professes that his conference schedule comparision is more accurate even though UofM didn't play Wisconsin and instead got to play Purdue and Illinois. Riiiiight.
