Magic wrote check for 50 million as buy in for Dodger deal

  • When Frank McCourt sold the Dodgers earlier this year, the fact that Magic Johnson was part of the new ownership group went a long way toward helping recapture a part of the fan base lost during the McCourt era.

But one question remained: How much did Magic invest to be part of the group?

Johnson answered that question in a segment that will appear on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" Tuesday night at 10 p.m. PDT.

"I wrote a $50-million check," Johnson tells interviewer Joe Frankel. "The largest check in my life."

Johnson goes on to talk about how he learned the value of hard work and to respect money.

"I saw my dad go to work every day at General Motors and on his trash-hauling truck. And I understood how he valued every dollar."

Did Magic ever have second thoughts? "Only when I had to tell my wife. I said, 'Honey, sit down....'

Couldn't be as bad as the last time he had to do that.

  • So. I've got that much floating around in my couch cushions.

  • 50 mil....if Coach D's balls have to be put in a wheelbarrow this guy needs a dump truck. Unfortunately, they make that huge trade and the team hasn't done DICK....but in the long run he'll recoup his money: the TV deal is DYNAMITE from what I've read. Guy is a helluva businessman overall.

  • Magic is one bad man. You know a guy has gotten some shit done when no one talks about how great a player he was anymore.

  • That's a ton of cash, but a drop in the bucket, considering the Dodgers cost $2B.

Also not a huge stretch for a guy worth between $500-$700 million.

  • Big deal. The big wheels of tRCMB can write a check for $50M.

(It'll bounce like a Delmon Young grounder to short, but that's beside the point.)
