Man kills 12, wounds 50 at Batman showing

Curious as to what the U.S. number would be if we removed the gang-banger v gang-banger deaths nationwide?

Or am I supposed to care when a bunch of gang-bangers die in a turf shootout?

The "care" is that there's even gang bangers who are forced into gangs because of lack of opportunities and terrible educational infrastructure.

Well, you didn't link anything, so I assume it's a self serving "American sucks" liberal post.

    However, I'll indulge you:

"Countries that have had regular armed conflicts for 50 years and those that have a large cartel presence...". Gee, how very prescient of you. I'd like to see the countries you left out of your accounting, as you arrived at you self-serving, unscientific and deliberately deceptive assertation.

Even among the nations in your own little poll, you seem far too quick to ignore the readily available demographic information. Why is that? Why ignore money, religious, race or ethnic issues. Do you pretend that all people are predisposed to acting exactly the same as others?

At the very least, report the facts (along with your convenient ommissions, or those of some survey company), explain away the facts, scoff at the facts...do ALL that before you just start making shit up. TIA

Never argue with those clowns...liberals cannot think for themselves.

Good point. One of these days, we need to create a nation wide public education system. ALL kids should be required to attend at least until the age of 16. Hell, if they're poor, we'll feed them breakfast and lunch too. With opportunities like that, gangs won't be a viable option for anyone other than those who just thinks it easier, or more cool to be in a gang. But, at least everyone has the option. As long as there is no accountability for anyone other than white males over the age of 40, I'm cool with it.

Oh, and we need academic college scholarships as well. Any truly deserving student should get free college (even though it takes literally nothing more than filling out an application to get a school loan) education too, but hey, I'm living in a dream land. I don't know why we don't have that now.

    Someday, my utopia will happen.

  • Typical progressive tripe. There are plenty of low-income children who do not choose the gang-banger route. Granted, those are usually the ones fortunate enough to have a father in the home that was actually present and engaged in the formative years of his child’s development.

Maybe that’s where we begin to correct the problem -- impressing upon fathers their responsibilities to society by sticking around to help in the raising of their children. It’s difficult for single, low-income mothers to do it alone.

In 2010 there were 8775 firearm homicides (6009 with handguns, 13,000 total murders)

2193 were non-gang related arguments or fights
    1391 were non-gang related felonies
    980 were unspecified non-felonies
784 were juvenile gang and gangland related
    3380 were unknown

3x as many people killed each other in arguments than they did in gang related shootings.

I ... am ... SHOCKED! SHOCKED to hear that guns are used to kill by non-gang members! panic

    Yes. It is.

  • Roger Ebert takes the mic:

Should this young man — whose nature was apparently so obvious to his mother that, when a ABC News reporter called, she said “You have the right person” — have been able to buy guns, ammunition and explosives? The gun lobby will say yes. And the endless gun control debate will begin again, and the lobbyists of the National Rifle Association will go to work, and the op-ed thinkers will have their usual thoughts, and the right wing will issue alarms, and nothing will change. And there will be another mass murder.

That James Holmes is insane, few may doubt. Our gun laws are also insane, but many refuse to make the connection. The United States is one of few developed nations that accepts the notion of firearms in public hands. In theory, the citizenry needs to defend itself. Not a single person at the Aurora, Colo., theater shot back, but the theory will still be defended.

I was sitting in a Chicago bar one night with my friend McHugh when a guy from down the street came in and let us see that he was packing heat.

“Why do you need to carry a gun?” McHugh asked him.

“I live in a dangerous neighborhood.”

“It would be safer if you moved.”

This would be an excellent time for our political parties to join together in calling for restrictions on the sale and possession of deadly weapons. That is unlikely, because the issue has become so closely linked to paranoid fantasies about a federal takeover of personal liberties that many politicians feel they cannot afford to advocate gun control.

I don’t know if James Holmes cared about Batman. I suspect he cared deeply about seeing himself on the news.

Excellent analysis. Because the USA demographics and immigration policies are identical to Finland, Australia, England and Canada.

  • I spend a lot of time on this board lurking, and After reading the majority of this thread tonight, between the bickering and arguing, all I really could think about was the families that were effected by this tragedy. I can't imagine the heartbreak I would have felt if one of my family members were in that theater. I know that I'm going to make sure that I tell my family that I love them. Because no matter what comes of this situation will never come close to the effects that these families will feel everyday and every morning that they wake up and have to come to terms with what happened. It really puts things that you value in life in perspective. Go green!

  • Well I see this thread has quickly gone from a discussion about the events of last night and those affected to a liberal/conservative catfight. If there is one thing both parties are great at it is blaming everyone else.

Exactly. One kook with a gun killed and injured dozens. Time to arm up and fight back.

Yes, we have heard it before, it is better to allow the kook to kill as many as wanted without resistance for safety reasons. I am not convinced.

I also noted several other categories that I don’t care about. Two dumb asses get drunked up in a bar, take it outside (or not) where one or both wide up shot? Don’t care.

I’d like to know the stats of innocent victims of gun-related shootings. Not gang-bangers killing gang-bangers, not cops killing bad guys, not two idiot road-ragers dualing it out, not two or more drunked-up or drugged-up losers trying to out-tough each other. Don’t care about those.

Just the innocent victims. Give me that number if you can.

the fuck does immigration have to do with it?

It's pretty simple. Americans have far more guns than any other developed nation on earth. Americans die by guns far more than any other developed nation on earth. Some Americans think the answer to that problem is more guns.

    Fuck Yeah bitches!!!

  • Also, Gomer, I’d also like to know the number of innocent victims killed by guns that were obtained illegally. Because there is nothing that can be done about that. No amount of gun laws will prevent a criminal from obtaining a gun if he or she really wants one. A total ban on the purchase of guns -- all guns --will not solve the issue either, not for generations, if ever.

Now, if you’re talking gun confiscations, which I think many here are, how are you going to achieve that? How do you determine who has them? Will it be on the honor system? If so, then only the law-abiding will comply by turning them in voluntarily...and only some of them will do so.

I can sell all of my long guns to some dude tomorrow in the parking lot of the local Walmart and neither the feds nor the state authorities would know anything about it. So, again, how do you go about locating them and getting them to the melting furnace?

And if my guns are confiscated, who is going to reimburse me for the thousands of dollars I have invested in my guns, optics and accessories? Or am I just supposed to eat that cost?
