Man kills 40+ lb bobcat cause he can

  • Can someone explain to me why we allow people to kill Bobcats in the UP? what the hell is the point? I'm all for deer, duck, turkey, or whatever other kind of hunting you want to do for food. but this is fucked up. He tracks one of the largest of a majestic species on record and then gets his picture in the paper with his underwear hanging out.

SAULT STE. MARIE - Tracking skills and an electronic call allowed veteran predator hunter Ron Edgerly to kill his biggest bobcat yet after 58 years of hunting the Eastern Upper Peninsula swamps.

  • Bobcats are legal to kill in Michigan with a bag limit of 2. Just like anything else it is DNR regulated and has conservation purposes behind it, both for the animal itself and its prey populations.

I haven't thought this through, so please help me here...please elaborate on how allowing the hunting of bobcats is good for conservation of animal species.

  • Holy crap, that is one badass looking cat.

And the reason for killing the bobcat is...

Really a shame that some people like to just kill such animals just as a hobby.

  • This works best with the tenderloins or a steak cut.

    1. Cut Bob Cat into 1/2 strips and marinate in a mixture

    1/2 cup orange juce
    1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
    2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
    1 table spoon salt
    2 table spoons ketchup
    a good dash of A1
Wrap bob cat strips in bacon.

Let sit over night in fridge or at least 6 hours

Set up the grill for indirect heating

get a cedar plank and arrange bacon wraped cat
    evenly across the plank.
    Cook until medium rare.

Remove bob cat from plank and discard
Salt and pepper to taste and Eat Cedar Plank

I'm not a fish cop so I cannot give you specifics, but population and territory, disease control, food supply are the Why and What behind most hunting and trapping regulations and license allowances. Conservation is not 100% preservation of one species. It's achieving a balance.

Yep, because the Chicken, Beef, Pork, and fish that you eat where grown in the Grocery store. I hunt and fish. Some people like being outside in Nature and hunt. He may use it as a Fur or a mount. I don't know, I don't trap or predator hunt with the exception being Coyotes, because i believe there are way to many of them and they are destroying populations of other game animals.

But yep call me insecure because I like to take my beagle out hunting, which he loves and enjoy being out doors and eat something that I didn't buy at a grocery store. I even kill Deer, poor Bambi is delicious and much healthier than Beef, and I even have to process the animal myself. i don't pick it up at a store where someone made minimum wage to butcher it.

  • There's nothing better than the splendor of nature. A powerful, sleek, intelligent predator that's honed its skills through the millennia. Then to put a burning piece of lead through its flesh 400 yards is just pure beauty. It was him or you (and your high powered rifle w/scope ad 100+ rds of ammo and your .45 pistol just in case you emptied your 15 rd clip of rifle ammo and came up empty. Oh and your foot long hunting knife you bought just in case you had to field dress a hippo. Plus the blind your in that's 25 feet off the ground and heated, with wi-fi and satellite tv).

Yep, just you and your foe. Man v beast, 2 go in, one comes out (1 slightly drunk from the hours of drinking in said blind and annoyed that the packers lost while he was watching the game and posting on tRCMB, again in said blind). Just as nature intended, killing in the name of office/house/double-wide ornaments.

I think you're missing the point. The guy isn't going to eat the bobcat and bobcats are not nearly as prevalent as deer.

Edit: I somehow quoted the wrong poster.

all of which has nothing to do with using electronic calls to bait a Bobcat into range so you can kill it and take a picture of its carcass.

This. There is a delicate balance of how many animals an area can carry. When an are becomes over populated disease can hit. Bovine TB is an example. Because of farmland taking away a lot of the natural habitat and providing a great food source, the Deer Numbers in Michigan Skyrocketed allowing the Deer with TB to be closer to other Deer and infect them. And when an infected Deer dies. Scavengers such as Coyotes, Bobcats, Racoons etc.. can contract the the disease.

There is also a point where nature can only support so many predators before the entire population suffers. Prey numbers drop, thus all the animals suffer. And a lot of this happens because of the farm land had taken away the natural habitat and cover for the animals. But we need the farms to provide food for our human population.

I understand that people don't hunt but there is no reason to insult us that do. Our money pays for the state and .Federal governments to maintain the lands that people hike on, mountain bike etc..We also support organizations that make contributions to the MDNR, or USFWS through the Wild Turkey Federation, MUCC, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever etc...So next time anyone is taking a hike or mountain biking on state or federal land, thank a hunter for helping pay for that land and the work done on it. Or we can stop hunting and you can go to a mall or housing development in the same location.

Nice! I went out today at Pontiac Lake Game area, didn't see anything, I need a new spot. My boy turns 3 in a couple months and I can't wait for him to get old enough to walk with me behind Duffy (my beagle) who is only 2 months older then my son. Either way I love hunting behind my dog because as you know they love it and my favorite part of hunting is watching my dog hunt and hearing him howl when he is on a scent.
