It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

There are guys in my beer league not wearing a shield. Blows my mind.

Mine too and I do not understand it. Especially when you consider the varying skill level in beer leagues and the lack of general stick control. I can already remove two teeth so I have no interest in making it more. But to risk my vision, it's a no-brainer.

Google Borje Salming and tell me why non-NHLers shouldn't all be wearing Itechs or cages.

They just need to use Nerf pucks.

    Izzo Court

  • It was only 1997 when Craig MacTavish was playing without a helmet.

The shield is a personal preference. I understand why some guys don't wear them at the professional level. I thinks it's borderline insane to go down to block a shot without a visor.

    Izzo Court

  • One of the strange things about wearing a visor is that it gets you an extra penalty if you instigate a fight and are wearing one. I've seen this come up a couple of times this season in various games.

I am sick and tired of seeing players go to the ice kicking their legs madly. Always a sign of a severe eye injury, and looks like Marc Staal was just the latest. DAMMIT. Flashbacks to Stevie Y., in the last game he played BEFORE WEARING A VISOR.

    DAMMIT.

After Marc Staal’s eye injury, the NHL visor debate continues to rage | Puck Daddy - Yahoo! Sports

From the blog Puck Daddy: The visor debate in the National Hockey League shouldn’t exist. There’s not a debate in the AHL or in European leagues or in countless levels of amateur and youth hockey, because eye protection is mandatory. In that sense, it isn’t … Continue reading →

  • He skated off after that. Can you imagine if that was a soccer match? Hell, those guys take dives and fake an injury and that results in a bunch of keystone cop looking guys running out, a "doctor" assessing the injury and squirting water on it, and the guy going off on a stretcher carried by about six guys.

That shows how much of a tough sob Stevie was. Tried to skate back to the bench.

  • I had a beer league game on Wednesday, was thinking of this thread, so I noticed it more. The people who were wearing visors or nothing always turned their head when there was a slapshot from the point. It was pretty funny to watch.

I also think it's funny when people wear tinted visors in men's league. They think they are so cool.

Lol, not at Fraser, it is bronze league though. Some guy on the other team showed up during the second period in my last game. He had a winged helmet, Michigan pants, Michigan socks, and a tinted visor.... of course he was terrible.

  • As an aside, I play in a beer league at Viking Arena in Hazel Park with the average age around 35-40. But I'm sure it's like this everywhere. We're in a C+/B- league and every team has that one guy that should be two tiers up from the rest of the skaters.

It's just absurd watching Gretzky Jr. constantly skate through everyone. I wish they could relegate players to the appropriate skill level leagues to make it more enjoyable for the remaining 95% of skaters.

In our league they allow you to have 2 "B league" players on each team. Of course this always leads to arguments at the league meetings. What our team does is put the top players on defense... it's a great way to avoid getting called out.

And yes the Gretzky types are extremely annoying. People have brought out OHL players to our games.

  • Big bros Eric and Jordan have seen enough, decide to go with the visors. Mom is reportedly happy.

Jordan Staal, Eric Staal to wear visors after eye injury to brother Marc - ESPN

Apparently seeing their brother Marc suffer a harrowing eye injury was enough to convince Eric and Jordan Staal to start wearing visors.
