More people in the DC area follow Maryland than people who follow Rutgers in the NY area.

They'd just make Rutgers-Maryland a guaranteed crossover and you'd play one less crossover game, but the idea of nine conference games could come up again.. I'd agree with you there. They're not going to re-draw the divisions.

MD i can maybe understand. Good academics, decent football teams at times and good basketball teams. But Rutgers??? Thats a terrible fucking move. Youa re not going to get NY/NJ/PA area with rutgers. The only kids who go to rutgers are kids who arent smart enough to go to ivy league in that area or penn state. Their basketball teams suck and you will not get the NY/NJ media market there. No one in that area cares for college sports, and by chance some they do, only care for Penn state in football and Cuse in basketball.
I would rather add BYU than rutgers or Maryland

LOL. Hadn't thought of that before, but with IU, OSU, and Wisconsin, and the (possible) addition of these two, we would have way too much red in the conference. Yet another reason to root against this deal.

Just TV ratings.
Timing is everything and I would have loved to see Pitt but with JoePa/Spanier at PSU most likely not wanting Pitt it appears the ACC made a package deal for 'Cuse and Pitt. 'Cuse wanted no part of the Big Ten.
Would have loved to have seen Mizzou and KU join but the Big Ten opted for Nebraska and Missou who was also hellbent to get way from the Texas shadow joined Texas A&M in the SEC. Both KU and Oklahoma would have been nice but state legislature/political pressure have shown you can't have the Jayhawks without K-State and you can't get the Sooners without OK State.
Maryland brings the #22 and #9 (Baltimore and DC) TV markets. Rutgers brings mythical eyes from the NYC TV market which most know cares about pro sports.

If those are your options, you stay at 12 then. Expansion for the sake of expansion doesn't always work. Just ask the NHL.

It's all about subscriber fees. The BTN creates a dual revenue stream, which is what has made ESPN its money. Ratings obviously matter for advertising revenue, but that is on the back end. On the front end, the BTN can make a killing by getting the channel carried by large carriers in huge markets, like NYC, DC and Baltimore. Because cable carriers bundle channels even indifferent viewers will be indirectly paying for the channel. So in the end, the actual TV ratings are only half the story--or maybe even less than half the story.

Colorado would likely have been in the mix as well had they not already gone to the Pac10, Nebraska would have had a historic rival to bring in (and probably been able to preserve that Friday after Thanksgiving game tradition).
I don't think the Big 10 presidents were ready to jump by 3 teams, opted to play it safe by just adding Nebraska, and now that they apparently have goals that include 2 additional teams, the best fits are no longer there.
