Matt Charboneau talks about MSU as NC contenders

  • The offensive line is deep and talented and will be blocking for a group of running backs as good as any in the Big Ten. Special teams should remain solid and the defense, well, it's hard to find the right adjective for that group.

The word talented would not do it justice. Nine starters return from a team that was sixth in the nation a year ago in total defense. And if its performance on Saturday was any indication, this defense will be one that could lead the Spartans somewhere they have only dreamt of in recent years — a national championship.

It might seem crazy to assume that Michigan State could be included in such talk. Many of its detractors will be quick to point out that Michigan State is breaking in a new quarterback and has a crop of receivers who have little to no experience.

But one look at this defense — one featuring an outstanding pass rush, a punishing group of linebackers and two of the best cover corners in the Big Ten — and it doesn't seem so strange.

Michigan State defense is stellar, maybe BCS title-worthy | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com

The analysis of Michigan State after it closed its spring practices Saturday with its annual Green-White game is simple: The Spartans are good. The defense, well, its hard to find the right adjective for that group.

  • We're not going to win a national title for the same reason BT teams usually don't: it's just too much of a gauntlet. Even if we get through BSU and nd, we've still got o$u, at wusconsin, at um, and nuhbraska, and that's just before the BT title game. Plus, we're breaking in a new QB and a new set of WRs, there's bound to be bumps in the road. I think our defense is going to be really, really good. Still, if we get to bowl season with two losses, I'll be ecstatic.

The schedule gets a lot easier next year. Too bad Gholston will be gone.

  • It's not ridiculous to think that we will be in the hunt to win the conference. The @UM/@Wiscy/NEB stretch will be the key.

The B1G conference champ will always be talked about as an outside NC contender. We are one of the favorites to win the conference this year so it shouldn't be too surprising.

Our receivers need some work though. Will be nice to get Maxwell back too. Our passing game has to keep teams honest so that they can't just put 8 in the box and stuff the run

  • Depends on how the playoff system is structured. If it's set as athe top four conference champs, then MSU can have loses and still get into the system by wining the B1G Champ game.

    Rook

  • This is the goal and it's about time the Press started talking about it, and it's past time that MSU fans start accepting that this program is building towards that goal.

    Johnny2x2x

  • Nice recogition, but MSU has to win the games. Players need to know that there is a huge difference between talking the talk, and walking the walk. Do people still say that?

Well, the same could be said for the SEC, but someone always seems to make it out of that league for the NC game (or, like last year, 2 teams). Most years a great 1 loss team can make it, and with our schedule I think we could make the NC game with a loss. Now, 2 losses will not do it for sure. As difficult as the schedule is, if our defense is LSU or Bama 2011 good, we can win some games with between 7 and 14 points, and maybe win some games we wouldn't otherwise given our potential problems on offense.

  • I don't think we should be an underdog in any game this year. Closest would be @Wisky @scum. That being said, I don't see us going 13-0 (O/U 11.5).

I do. Time to visualize it.

uw loses the main reason they won conf- Wilson. Put a typical uw stiff QB back there, we have 10+ sacks in both games. btw, don't see losing toon as hurting them too badly, he was sub-par and the white boy will have a good year for them in his place.

neb loses crick, the LB and dennard on D. No idea who takes their place, or how they are looking.

nd loses the best WR they'ev had since the rocket, and their best defensive player.

    mentalstate

  • That's a lot of pressure to put on an inexperienced QB. If MSU had an experienced QB, I'd have no problem thinking that this year could be the year but until Maxwell gets out there as the number one guy against real competition, we just won't know.

No doubt! When was the last time we heard something like this about football, 50's maybe 60's? The Spartans deserve this and I would love to see them further progress towards world domination as well as the Universe!!flex

I heard someone on the radio saying the B1G champ would NOT have made the four team playoff, had it taken place last year. It was based on strength of conference, and bcs rankings. It would have been the two SEC schools, and two others I'm forgetting.

He said it. And no one laughed. Not even after Denicos Allen was out of earshot, which is basically what happened after a Michigan State University football player named Demond Williams said roughly the same thing in the same setting six years ago.

    confused

Dang the SEC is better than I thought if they can manage 2 teams when only conference champs get the nod.

Last year would have been LSU, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, and Oregon I believe.

I'm not a big fan of that system though because it doesn't get the best 4 teams into a playoff. What happens if say Virginia Tech is the absolute best team in the country one year, but the ACC doesn't rank as one of the top 4 conferences that year?

  • This team reminds me of last years Alabama team. The defense was not that far off from Alabama's, and Leveon Bell reminds me of Trent Richardson just not as fast. If Maxwell can match McCarrons 2,634 yards and 16 touchdowns we should be great. The Big Ten is not a great conference so why cant we go undefeated? Every team lost key players at key positions, but MSU has by far the best defense returning. I know it sounds cliche, but defense wins championships. I really don't understand how true Spartan fans can honestly say we don't have a chance of winning the National Championship.
