Matt G.'s parents are named Homer and Marge. He lived on a street called Evergreen Terrace.
He was pitching a different idea that got turned down, so he and James Brooks quickly re-convened in the hallway and came up with the Simpons pitch off the cuff.

Several characters in the Simpsons are named after streets in Portland: Quimby, Lovejoy, Kearney, Flanders, etc.

Al Jean, from farmington, has a lot to do with the characters as well, and they are from right here in michigan. I'm not sure if he went to North or Harrison, but Mr. Burns supposedly is based on a teacher there, and there's a bunch of other characters. If you've ever been to Jean's hardware shop, I'm not sure if it's closed, but those are his parents.

Interesting question. I'd have to go with the Simpsons for pure staying power and popularity over the years...if South Park sticks around for another ten years then who knows.
I would assume more people right now view South Park as must-see TV, not so much with the Simpsons anymore. But, that can come and go (Simpsons was absolutely must see TV some years ago, and honestly I'm seeing less and less South Park episodes that really hit).

The Jeans went to Harrison. Al Jean is a really nice guy, and really funny. He helped put his siblings through college after graduating Harvard. I grew up in FH and spent some time working on the Simpsons writing room. All the writers were intensely curious about Jean's Hardware. That place was an incredible dump, but they had everything you needed, somewhere.

I interpreted the article as Groening saying his INSPIRATION for the Simpsons' Springfield is the town in Oregon.
The town on the show I think could still be in Middle America.

Growing up in FH as well, but going to North, Gene's Hardware was the first place I would go whenever I needed anything.
You are right, it was kind of dumpy inside, but I always liked that about it.

I trailed along with my dad on visits to Jean's many times as a kid. Remember the vats of bird seed in the front of the store...
