Nobody does. But coming into camp he was 5th on the depth chart. Injuries and a couple ineligibles took him to #2 going in to the week of the opening game against Mihammy. . . . . and then. .
he "became the primary signal caller when starter Dale Dorminey suffered a serious knee injury in practice just four days before the season opener against the defending national champion Miami Hurricanes" - wiki
and of course, he went 9-1-1 that year. and was a 4 year starter.

Chad Henne quickly jumped from 3rd or 4th on the depth chart to 1A, when everyone thought he was still #3. The starter went down with a torn labrum? in the week before practice, and the rest was history for the then true frosh.
Oh, and this is spring practice. Maxwell will be perfectly fine come the fall.
