Med School interview

  • hello RCMBers. I have just been invited to 2 interviews next week for med schools. What should I expect from the interview. Are they just gonna be generic why you want to be a doctor questions? If you have any tips please give them to me. I am kinda freaking out about this.

  • Tell them you want to be a gynecologist because you like to fingerblast skanks.

  • A lot of why do you want to be a doc, etc, etc. where do you see yourself in 10 yrs? Some questions on healthcare policy so know that stuff. And then there's the usual tell me about yourself, what 3 words describe you best, what makes you a good fit for medicine. Then there's the unusual outta left fielders that you can't prepare for. Best of luck to you!

  • Congratulations that is a huge achievement. What schools are you interviewing at? I'm not one to give a whole lot of advice and sometimes it just comes down to doing it because these interviews can be so variable. I would recommend being familiar with the mission of the medical school and trying to draw parallels between the mission of the medical school and the goals you want to pursue in the field of medicine. Be ready to answer questions about your personal statement.

Be yourself and try not to come off as arrogant, especially if your going to be around other medical students. A lot of times these interviews end up being a lot of chit chat so just show them that you can function normally in a regular conversation.

    Good luck.

also, ask them questions related to things you see in japanese porn scenes that involve the patient sitting on a table, with a curtain blocking her view, and a doctor inserting his dong, fingers and toys into her.

    questions like:
"do they really squeal during the procedure?"
"why is the curtain necessary? why can't they watch me videotape the my finger blasting?"

Well you got through the hardest part lol. The worst part about the application process is the wait. Its a pain in the ass. I have been checking my email every 5 minutes for the past 2 months lol. Just make sure you tell your teachers for LORs ahead of time. I asked mine like in spring and she didnt write me one until august. It sucks and you have to keep reminding them they you need the fucking letters.

  • Be humble, don't brag, don't make excuses, don't apologize. If you got the interview your stats are good enough for admission, this is a personality test. Try to show that you have personality and an ability to interact with strangers comfortably. Make sure to show that you're curious, they look for "lifelong learners"

Most importantly remember that you are an investment to the school, if they accept you and you drop out, they lose a lot of money. So you need to be very convincing that you understand how incredibly hard med school and medicine is. Have a solid well thought out reason for "why med school?" (doesn't have to be a grand epiphany) and show that you are a mature and dedicated person who has a grasp on what they want in life and what it takes to get it.

oh and show some of that compassion bullshit too blah

    BearMining4Coal

  • also remember that the person interviewing you is your ally, they will help make the case for your admission to the board.

Final note: I had one terrible interview, still got in without being statistically above avg for that school.

    BearMining4Coal

  • Don't take it too seriously, because the rest of your life is just interviews and hoop jumping. Be yourself (well unless you act like most RCMB'ers, in that case don't).

PS - You can still turn back now. I advise business.

    Signed,

This is the same play they ran earlier, turn the corner and look. Nice back door. Cleaves the alley-oop. Ohh! What a setup off the timeout!

  • Sincerity.

Once you fake that, you're in.

The Oakland one is relatively easy. The facilities are amazing and the connection with Royal Oak Beaumont is very cool. You have two interviews with two different doctors. They are both pretty laid back. My advice would be to obviously know why you want to be a doctor and why you want to go to Oakland. Know your application (activities and such) because they will likely ask about a couple meaningful undergrad experiences. Aside from that it is a pretty standard interview. I would recommend researching a little about the school and have some answers prepared for that question. Also, know why you stand out against other applicants, what makes you unique. Other than that, same advice everyone else said, just be relaxed and be confident. The interviews at Oakland are just mean to be more of conversations than a real formal thing. Congrats on the interviews and good luck!

  • I was just having a discussion about interviews with some of my peers today. Apparently, it's now all about "humanistics", you need to be able to show that you are not a weirdo and that you interact well with others. I was told that Johns Hopkins actually started the interviewees off in a gym and had some balls laying around - the interviewers were spying on them taking notice of who would pick up the balls and play/interact with their mates. I thought that was crazy, but I can see how it's necessary, more and more the application process is weeding out normal people and selecting for odd balls.

Big congratulations on getting some interview offers. Considering most schools get a few thousand applicants and only interview a few hundred shows you've done well.

First of all, you're always going to get the basic questions where they ask for you to tell them about yourself and why you want to be a doctor. Make sure you don't give generic responses. If you tell them you want to be a doctor because you like biology and want to help people, you'll be written off pretty quick. So be sure to draw upon personal emotions and experiences that emphasize why you really want to go into medicine.

Also, learn as much about the school as possible (mission statement, curriculum, research opportunities, etc) so you can emphasize why you would be a good fit there.

Lastly, studentdoctor.net is your new best friend. There are forums on that site for every med school where people post what they were asked during their interviews. So you can pretty much figure out every possible question you might get.

    Good luck and Go Blue.

I had one last year that went well (got into the school). Nothing terribly out of the ordinary but I would be prepared for some sort of ethical questions that doesn't necessarily have a "right" answer. I had one of those. Other than that, I got asked a couple questions specific to medicine (to put me on the spot a bit), but it wasn't really a high pressure environment so it went fine.

They aren't looking for a right answer necessarily, but more so just how you respond and if you are articulate and well-mannered. If you were invited, they already like you. Act professionally and don't say anything that would draw attention to you in a negative way and you should be fine.
