  • Allergic reaction to sunscreen. I've had a weird allergic reaction before that caught me off guard. I'm not allergic to anything that I know of, but for some reason I broke out in hives for about 10 hours or so last year. I think it was something in the beer I drank although I cannot be certain. Probably some yeast strain that didn't agree with me. Was really weird. Just random hives that itched like crazy. Never had anything like that before.

  • Good input. Update from this morning...

I took benedryl at 7 pm last night, knocked me out at 8. Didnt do anything though. Seriously, my ears feel like an itchy camp fire. I moved up my appt with the derm to this evening, so I will be sure to let you all know if I am really a goner.

And responding to your input...I do have a will. And a living trust. So I'm all set there.

Still certain its not bed bugs...brand new mattress, we are pretty clean, and its concentrated to a couple of areas.

Im pretty sure its going to be sunscreen related, but weird since I have never had a reaction to anything before and we used this stuff on the kids all last summer.

Im too cheap to pay for my high deductible costs to see a specialists, so here goes...

Went to a baseball game with the kids yesterday - all is good...used the kids 50spf sunscreen for the game and sat in the shade. Woke up in the middle of the night and my ears itched like crazy. Kind of a burning itch, like a mosquito bite, but a bit more fiery. Both ears all over.

Woke up this morning and I have itchy bumps on the backs of my legs and on my arms. My son had a non-painful heat rash/hives last week, but it went away quick and was more of an all over rash than it was bumps.

Background: Mid 30's,married, no funny side business, no food allergies overall very good health. Have all your basic allergies, but cats is the only thing that is severe, but I havent been around a pet of any kind in a long time. I have never had hives before so I hesitate to think that I am just getting them now.

So, powers of tRCMB, what say you? Me gone?

Coincidentally I have a regular dermatoligist appt scheduled for next week already...may have to move it up

Sunscreen intolerance is on the rise. People don't realize the types of chemicals that go into these concoctions. In fact, there are studies going right now that are correlating the rise of sunscreen usage with the increase in skin cancers. Kind of ironic eh?

I vote allergic reaction to the sunscreen.

Ironically, I was using the kids 50 because my uncle just passed away from stage 3 melanoma 3 weeks ago and Im freaked out by going out without protection (ba-dump). My cousin (his daughter) just sent something out about all the chemicals and linking to skin cancers. Im just gonna start carrying a golf umbrella everywhere. Or become a vampire.

    From the Mayo Clinic:

Melanoma occurs when something goes awry in the melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) that give color to your skin. Normally, skin cells develop in a controlled and orderly way — healthy new cells push older cells toward your skin's surface, where they die and eventually are sloughed off. But when some cells develop DNA damage, new cells may begin to grow out of control and can eventually form a mass of cancerous cells.

Just what damages DNA in skin cells and how this leads to melanoma isn't clear. It's likely that a combination of factors, including environmental and genetic factors, causes melanoma. Still, doctors believe exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and from tanning lamps and beds is the leading cause of melanoma.

UV light doesn't cause all melanomas, especially those that occur in places on your body that don't receive exposure to sunlight. This indicates that other factors may contribute to your risk of melanoma.

  • "Reports in the literature of sensitization associated with many commonly used sunscreening agents including p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), PABA derivatives, anthranilates, salicylates, cinnamates, benzophenones, and dibenzoylmethane derivatives are reviewed."

This is a quote from a paper titled: "Sunscreening agent intolerance: contact and photocontact sensitization and contact urticaria." from 1990
    Urticaria means itch.

Most of the research into this was done in the 80's and 90's though so I'm not sure if there are newer chemicals in use. I'm pretty sure that Zinc Oxide as a main ingredient is effective and less allergenic. It's used for diaper rash also.

He/She MD would likely read this thread and still make a half-assed diagnosis - but one that requires multiple treatments at double the price lol

    Well, results are in....

Looks like I'm not gone. No abnormal moles.

She thinks it was just a reaction to the sunscreen (not a surprise, though Ive never had an issue before). Got some cream to put on, and its fine everywhere except the ears. They burn when it goes on, probably much like when Patrick Kane pees.

That sounds like a half-assed diagnosis.

She cupped my balls, but i made her moan.

And the appointment was a screen for abnormal moles, given my uncle just passed away after a losing battle with melanoma. Just happened to get this rash and move the appt up a couple days.
