Correction: Brandon didn't say that, Martin did in the Death to the BCS book on his way out.

    Thanks. Good catch.

Not reading the whole thread, but this is completely normal for the BCS, and bowls in general. Without having to look at the numbers, every team in a BCS bowl lost that type of money. ESPN and bowls trying to flaunt the "huge pay day" for BCS games is a plain out lie. The bigger the bowl, the more money you lose. Why do you think Brandon said the two most profitable seasons in years for Michigan football was the first 2 with RichRod? Once again, this may have been mentioned in the thread, but I can guarentee you that State lost money in their bowl game as well.

The bowl games are broken. The ADs receive huge bonuses for football teams making bowl games, yet the university takes a massive hit sending their teams even to a stupid bowl like the Pizza Bowl in Detroit.

What's the payout for the Rose Bowl? Isn't it considerably bigger than any other BCS bowl?. If Wisconsin lost money how much did they lose?

  • Rose Bowl payout is the same as all other BCS games, including the title game iirc. In the neighborhood of $20 million per team but in the Big Ten bowl money is pooled and split evenly between schools so it isn't like Wisconsin made $20 million and lost money.

Rose Bowl paid out 17 million.

The only one that makes money on the bowls are the bowls themselves. It's a corrupt system run by cronies that curry favor through payola-type "gifts & junkets".

Why the conferences agree to unreachable ticket commitments for their teams selected is beyond logic. The tickets must be purchased AT FULL LIST PRICE. Other than the NCG who pays that now that we have Stub Hub?

Other than the Rose Bowl, the bowl organizers are corrupt. Remember, most of them are organized as charitable, non- profits.

    Why?

Because Commishiners and AD's get kickbacks.

Because DE'ers cause coaches and Athletic Officials to lose employment if Bowl Games are not reached.

Because coaches see the value of extra practice time and Bowl Pub for recruits prior to signing day.

Division 1 college football is the only NCAA college sports championship that out-sources its "tournament" in the form of mid and lower tiered bowls (almost all of them literally owned by ESPN) and the BCS.

Why? The NCAA is scared shitless one of the power conferences (read the SEC) will bolt from its fold.

No, it's more to the fact that the Bowl system actually predates the NCAA's mission of sanctioning other sports.

The NCAA was not founded to be a college sports oversight organization/league. It was founded to be a college football rules/safety organization. A lot of that tradition still exists in college football...

Also, remember who makes up NCAA committees...the same AD's and Commishiners receiving kick-backs from bowls and worrying about their job statuses.
