Michigan State offers Penn State commit

Now that they’re going to let teams exceed the 85 scholarship limit, we now have room for him.

Wait what? I have been out of the loop since I started getting more hours at my job and havent heard about this. Could someone explain please?

Teams apparently can go over the 85 limit to accept PSU transfers. NOT unsigned commits. Most in this thread are severely confused.

    Bingo.

And I would suspect he is offered at OLB

    This is correct.

PSU '13 verbals are just normal commits. You can continue to recruit them until they send their LOIs in.

The current PSU players may transfer without penalty. WOTS is that any team that accepts a PSU TRANSFER (Read; NOT A '13 VERBAL), may exceed the 85 man scholarship #, providing that their overall # of scholarships are reduced by that amount the next year.

For instance, if MSU is at 85 schollies and adds PSU SR DT Hill for this season, then MSU must be at 84 schollies for the '13 season.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

SO, MSU is adding Hill for this upcoming season? Excellent news! rockon

Which makes those SR's or RS JR's the ones you want to go after if they are going to transfer.

Does this addition mean that we're more likely to feature the 3-4?

lol, just using that as an example, and just about the only guy off of PSU State would take. Maybe Silar Redd as a speed-back threat. As good as Hodges is, I think MSU would stick with their current LBs. PSU replaces their entire secondary, so no Trenton Robinson-type player. Maybe take Justin Brown at WR, but really, not much on their current roster that MSU would use.

Now, for their current recruits, that's another story.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • SpartyFever said...

Wait, who is Hill and is it true he's going to transfer to MSU?

Jordan Hill is a SR starting DT for PSU. I was just using him as an example of how the scholarship/transfer rules would apply to MSU should they take a guy from PSU, like Hill.

I used Hill as an example because MSU could use a DT and he's probably their 2nd or 3rd best D player.

Have you seen something that clearly states it will only count for transfers? I’m just connecting the dots on this. And I could be 100% wrong, but it was pretty clear from insiders that he was not going to get an offer because we didn’t have room for him. So how did we get room now?

The mindset could be to make this as painless as possible for all parties involved. Why make a kid start the recruiting process all over again, or pick a school that was previously his 3rd or 4th choice because the second choice has already filled the spot. Just a thought.

Yea, why would the NCAA impose restrictions for taking kids who haven't signed a NOI? Until you sign on the dotted line, you can go anywhere you want. The only waivers the NCAA would have to grant would be for current players @PSU.

Oh, all 2012 kids have been released from their letters of intent. PSU's '12 recruiting cycle wasn't that great though.

Sorry, those recruits knew this was possible, despite whatever O'Brien was selling them.

The NCAA has no jurisdiction over anyone who has not signed their LOI. A verbal means absolutely nothing to them.

  • Jesus, think of what you guys are saying. If any of Penn States committed players could transfer to anywhere without counting towards that schools scholarship count they could effectively all go to a different school together. Do you guys really think that makes sense?? "OSU signed all 12 of Penn State's commits, but wont count towards their scholarship count" Do you think the NCAA would stand with that? It's not that hard to grasp, WE DID NOT OFFER ZACH BECAUSE THIS OPENED ROOM. My guess is that after Zach committed to PSU, Dantonio felt we could use him on our team (wether it is at WR or OLB) and didn't want to recruit a committed player unless the recruit spoke with them first. So either Dantonio was contacted by Zach after this, or he decided with the sanctions that the players would be fair game due to common knowledge thinking players will be having second thoughts.

  • Dude, as you said, "it's not that hard to grasp." Unfortunately you have grasped nothing so far. If 30 players went somewhere else, that team would have to find room to be under 55 scholarship players the following year. No teams will take more than 2 or 3 guys.

That only applies for current PSU players. 2013 recruits, like Bradshaw, are not current PSU players. They're treated just like normal recruits; if you have room to take them, you can take them and they sign their letters of intent in Feb.

The 85 man limit exception ONLY applies if a current PSU player, like Hodges or Redd, decides to go to another school, AND that school is already at 85 scholarship players.

Edit: Please understand that the 85-man limit exception is NOT official yet.

I'm saying IF we offered him because he wouldn't count towards our scholarship count what is stopping a team from signing as much as they can since they would not be penalized. Obviously one team isn't going to sign all of them. What I am saying is that the 2013 class is under no control of the NCAA. If players decommit from PSU and end up going somewhere else they would count towards that schools 2013 scholarship count.

I fail to see where I'm not getting this.

    PPTPWmsu

  • Thank you, at least Rocky gets it. 2013 Penn State commits are NOT Penn State players. They're just like any other high school player in America right now.

According to Zach's father a few weeks ago (on the Duff), MSU coaches had zero contact with the Bradshaw family.

I understand what everyone is saying (and it makes sense), but then it is one helluva coincidence that MSU offered him the same day (morning!) of PSU sanctions after having no contact the prior six months.

Regardless, love the kid's film and am glad he has the opportunity to play for his dream school if he so chooses.

    Congrats Zach (and father, Brad)!

I get that for sure. What I can remember (which may or may not be right) at the time we were not recruiting Zach because we had just gotten two WR commits with Kilgore and Harris. Dantonio may have been higher on them than he was on Zach. The committed on the 25th of last month, Zach committed to PSU on the 27th. Since then we have seen MD has still been recruiting and offering other WR's, so maybe he figured to offer Zach now that all of their commits are decided whether to stay or drop their commitment to PSU. I still believe Dantonio doesn't recruit committed players, so perhaps Zach contacted him.

I would say this is what I find interesting. What has changed between now and 2 months ago that Zach is now an immediately desirable recruit?

The staff is allegedly pursuing OL, DL, and a strong safety mainly, right? Could Zach be that strong safety?

MSU looking for a big-bodied possession WR in this class. Kilgore is the speedy guy, Harris is the PR/KR/AP-type player, but they want a guy who can go across the middle and pick up 8 yards on 3rd and 7. Zach fits that mold.

He could also grow into a TE, play OLB or SS.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

This is the conventional wisdom. No one outside of that building at the corner of Shaw Lane and Chestnut Road really knows what is happening.
