  • the most damning part of that presser is where Roushar talks about being down after the pick 6 as if they really had their backs against the wall. Jesus, it was an 8 point game with nearly 30 minutes of football left.

I think we should take some of these people, and send 'em up to Bear Mountain for a picnic.

people like to hire their friends even when they are not qualified.

I think this is exactly what happened.

MD was given carte blanche authority to hire whomever he pleased. He decided to promote a friend - perhaps return a favor?

Will Roushar return. Well, MD is:
    * loyal, (and it would be tough to fire a friend)
    * Stubborn, (it would be tough to admit his hire was bad)

As such, short of MSU losing to Minnesota, I worry that Roushar will be back in 2013.

One of the qualities that many analysts will tell you helped MSU the last couple of years and also helped them to become a program with a solid foundation is stability of the staff. Not a whole lot of movement. Im like many who get frustrated when a play doesn't work and I do think rousharr calls a bad series sometime, but if anyone is so narrow minded that they think they can pin it on him they're just out of their mind. We still have linemen that dint know BASIC pass blocking rules. Just watch the film. Thing is, I know they watch it and they're graded on it and they're not coached to double an inside gap if there are two outside of you, but I'll be damned if I don't see it when I re watch the game. Short of pulling these kids out of the game every single time they fuck up and not having any consistency I have no idea what I'd do. We have a very low football iq on our line. I guess we can blame roushar for that, but it seems we have much deeper problems.

I see your point, but ever since the internal promotion of Bobby Williams, I've been sceptical of internal promoting a position coach to preserve "staff stability".

We all know Bobby was in over his head. Unfortunately, the MSU program took a serious nose-dive before Bobby was eventually fired. Culminating with his "I don't know..." response to Mason's question of "who's in charge?"

It's obvious to me that Roushar is in over his head. Will we see a repeat of the Bobby Williams era? Roushar plunging this program into a similar level obscurity before he's canned.

Then why are you stopping at roushar? You need to sack our line/te/receiver coach. We need to get rid of the philosophy as a whole. We need to do way more then replace a play caller.

That's been the contention of many of us for a long time. You all are looking at the play caller and ignoring the ignorant moves by linemen. , bad routes by receivers, horrible drops etc.

There are the blame Maxwell crew, the roushar crew, the philosophy crew. I'm not saying any are right or any are wrong, but the "one man is our problem" thinking is just insane. This is way deeper. If you can stomach it, just replay the game and watch our linemen. EVERYONE of them for four series. Don't look at the ball. Rewind it five times and watch five men on each play. You'll think how the fuck do we score at all

  • I do not think Roushar has done a good job at all this year, but just to throw something else into the discussion:

I'm wondering if sometimes people on this board overestimate how easy it is to dramatically change an offense in the middle of game or even during the week.

I don't know as much about the Xs and Os of football, but as a basketball coach myself, there are often times when I notice something in a game and have an idea of what would counter it or help our team, but implementing these changes to a group of kids on the fly who have spent so much time learning another system is not an easy task. For people who know football coaching better than I do, is there some element of this involved here? Sure there are some things we could do differently, but to a certain extent, aren't we stuck with the things we've been working on since training camps? And so, if those things don't work with who we have, I would think much of the blame on that falls to the HC.

Nice point, but it also takes someone with a BRAIN to understand what's going on. It's obvious from play calling that Roushar doesn't. No changes during the bye week - outstanding! Means he's never realized that something has been wrong.

IF Dantonio does not get rid of him then he's lost my support as head coach. I'm too old for MSU to go thru another 40 year decline and I'm not going to be silent. Not only Hollis but LKS is going to hear a LOT of feedback about this season. Oh and btw, for those of you who don't know, LKS loves and knows football and HATES TO LOSE!

A little history here: LKS was standing on the sideline vs U of Ill and MSU blew a play badly. She said (to nobody in particular ) "What the fuck is going on here!" That was the end of JLS!

  • I watched the whole NW/Michigan game and got a good feeling for the offense with the option etc.

So what do they do right off the bat against us? They fake the option and do that shovel pass for a big gain. That was GENIUS and a great example of an easy adjustment by a OC to change things up.

It is those type of adjustments that we are missing. We came off the bye week with nothing new.

All you need to do is listen to the first 20 seconds.

Q: A question like, did you do anything differently with the bye week?

A: No not really, just tried to stay true to who we are, looked at formations, didn't do a lot of different things.

This is why you suck Roushar. You're 5-5 and you didn't try to do anything differently? Makes sense. That's why you're now 5-6.

"stay true to who we are"

Like getting the football into the red zone, and not scoring. That's been true MSU football all season.

At what level do you coach? I understand your thought but I am guessing a big ten offensive playbook has an answer for everything.

We had tremendous success in balancing our formation with double tight keeping their defense balanced with two high. entire playbook is open here. Our multiple formations are just too cute for me. kiss principle when you out talent the opponent, and I firmly believe we had that advantage yesterday.

I coach at the high school level so not as advanced as the Big Ten obviously, but to hear everyone say, "Try something different. Try something different," just makes me wonder about all of the reasons why it can't possibly be that easy.

I think the NW play mentioned above was a good example of a little creativity that we seem to lack.

  • Placing all of the blame on the OC is absolutely ridiculous. We had over 400 yards of offense in this game-- clearly enough to win the game. There was also a good mix of plays-- some of which worked and some of which didn't. Understand that there were at least two HUGE sacks for significant loss coming off blitzes that were not picked up by the blocking back who many say will jump to the NFL after this season. There were also plays broken up by "matador" blocking by some of our most "experienced" offensive linemen. Dropped passes by multiple receivers. These players are not coached to miss blocking assignments or drop passes or fumble the ball or throw interceptions or miss field goals. As Coach D said in his post-game comments, there is "blame" for everyone in the program.

He is an o-line coach who got jumped up with one of the best offenses talent-wise MSU has ever had last year. Clearly this year it doesn't work and he doesn't have a clue as to coach his way out of it. That 4th down goal line call was horrible on any high school level. If Dantonio doesn't make a change, it is on him. I'm sorry.

Thank you. I don't often get overly angry about individual play calls in a game, but that 4th and goal call was terrible! Why not go play action? How about a naked bootleg? Anything but Le'Veon up the middle that fooled NOBODY, including the 70,000 spectators.

This season to me is just JLS all over again (but with D and O switched). Our defense is great, but knows they have to do everything perfect to win the game because our offense is going to fuck up. Eventually it wears on them and they break down where they normally wouldn't have. Reminds me of Drew Stanton trying to get a TD on every play because he knows the D is a sieve

Remember the pic 6? It was a first down after a run play to get said first down. While I don't have the numbers you know what our run/pass ratio was on first down. Pretty pass heavy. Those coaches on the other sideline get paid too. They dialed up a blitz because we are heavy all season long pass on first down.

Also, Bell got nearly half his yards in the 4th quarter and only in that quarter did we run heavy on first down.

his other interception was on first down I believe as well.

Now, to show the other side, I fully believe first down is the best down to throw, but only when there is balance does it make it the best down. We had no balance.

  • Roushar sucks and deserves a lot of the blame for the season's results. Look at facts though - MD is beyond loyal and he's not going to fire his friend.

The question really shouldn't be is Roushar going to be fired - its "can Roushar improve in the offseason as a coach?" We should be asking MD that kid of question... how specifically is he going to address those faults to make sure his coaching staff grows and improves. If he really is a good coach, then he *should* have an improvement plan for everyone on his staff...
