I think this is exactly what happened.
MD was given carte blanche authority to hire whomever he pleased. He decided to promote a friend - perhaps return a favor?
Will Roushar return. Well, MD is:
* loyal, (and it would be tough to fire a friend)
* Stubborn, (it would be tough to admit his hire was bad)As such, short of MSU losing to Minnesota, I worry that Roushar will be back in 2013.

One of the qualities that many analysts will tell you helped MSU the last couple of years and also helped them to become a program with a solid foundation is stability of the staff. Not a whole lot of movement. Im like many who get frustrated when a play doesn't work and I do think rousharr calls a bad series sometime, but if anyone is so narrow minded that they think they can pin it on him they're just out of their mind. We still have linemen that dint know BASIC pass blocking rules. Just watch the film. Thing is, I know they watch it and they're graded on it and they're not coached to double an inside gap if there are two outside of you, but I'll be damned if I don't see it when I re watch the game. Short of pulling these kids out of the game every single time they fuck up and not having any consistency I have no idea what I'd do. We have a very low football iq on our line. I guess we can blame roushar for that, but it seems we have much deeper problems.

I see your point, but ever since the internal promotion of Bobby Williams, I've been sceptical of internal promoting a position coach to preserve "staff stability".
We all know Bobby was in over his head. Unfortunately, the MSU program took a serious nose-dive before Bobby was eventually fired. Culminating with his "I don't know..." response to Mason's question of "who's in charge?"
It's obvious to me that Roushar is in over his head. Will we see a repeat of the Bobby Williams era? Roushar plunging this program into a similar level obscurity before he's canned.
We shall see...

I do not think Roushar has done a good job at all this year, but just to throw something else into the discussion:
I'm wondering if sometimes people on this board overestimate how easy it is to dramatically change an offense in the middle of game or even during the week.
I don't know as much about the Xs and Os of football, but as a basketball coach myself, there are often times when I notice something in a game and have an idea of what would counter it or help our team, but implementing these changes to a group of kids on the fly who have spent so much time learning another system is not an easy task. For people who know football coaching better than I do, is there some element of this involved here? Sure there are some things we could do differently, but to a certain extent, aren't we stuck with the things we've been working on since training camps? And so, if those things don't work with who we have, I would think much of the blame on that falls to the HC.

All you need to do is listen to the first 20 seconds.
Q: A question like, did you do anything differently with the bye week?
A: No not really, just tried to stay true to who we are, looked at formations, didn't do a lot of different things.
This is why you suck Roushar. You're 5-5 and you didn't try to do anything differently? Makes sense. That's why you're now 5-6.

At what level do you coach? I understand your thought but I am guessing a big ten offensive playbook has an answer for everything.
We had tremendous success in balancing our formation with double tight keeping their defense balanced with two high. entire playbook is open here. Our multiple formations are just too cute for me. kiss principle when you out talent the opponent, and I firmly believe we had that advantage yesterday.

He is an o-line coach who got jumped up with one of the best offenses talent-wise MSU has ever had last year. Clearly this year it doesn't work and he doesn't have a clue as to coach his way out of it. That 4th down goal line call was horrible on any high school level. If Dantonio doesn't make a change, it is on him. I'm sorry.

the most damning part of that presser is where Roushar talks about being down after the pick 6 as if they really had their backs against the wall. Jesus, it was an 8 point game with nearly 30 minutes of football left.

Placing all of the blame on the OC is absolutely ridiculous. We had over 400 yards of offense in this game-- clearly enough to win the game. There was also a good mix of plays-- some of which worked and some of which didn't. Understand that there were at least two HUGE sacks for significant loss coming off blitzes that were not picked up by the blocking back who many say will jump to the NFL after this season. There were also plays broken up by "matador" blocking by some of our most "experienced" offensive linemen. Dropped passes by multiple receivers. These players are not coached to miss blocking assignments or drop passes or fumble the ball or throw interceptions or miss field goals. As Coach D said in his post-game comments, there is "blame" for everyone in the program.
