Michigan ex-patriates - what would it take for you to move back?

  • I have been living in AZ for 17 years now, and it definitely feels like home. Last night the Mrs (who is also from MI) asked if there's any way I could ever see moving back.

My honest answer was it would probably take an incredible job opportunity that would enable me to retire after 5 years. Guess I just love hot weather and sand...

I'm curious to hear what it would take for others who have left the mitten to move back...

  • there is about the same thread 5 threads down the page.

  • A job that pays equal to or more that what I'm making right now. I'm only if Fort Wayne so I'd love to jump back over the boarder.

  • Detroit suddenly returning to the international city it was in the 1920s or so. Even that probably wouldn't be enough.

  • Born and raised in Detroit, graduated from Michigan State in 1987....lived in California, New Hampshire, Belgium, Italy, and Ohio before moving back to Michigan in 2003. Had job offers in Detroit and Lansing, but the wife and I wanted to be in a smaller town, wanted access to water and the outdoors, and wanted 4 seasons. Chose Traverse City over Burlington, Vermont and Portland, Oregon. We've made it work, but I think the only other place I'd move to in Michigan would be Marquette. If you're a city person, I'm not sure there is a lot to draw you to Michigan at this point........

  • Lived in Jax and Chicago. Loved Chicago immensely, but we moved back to Metro D a couple years ago. It didnt take much, we couldve stayed in Chicago. Basically it took me to get an equivalent job, same pay and for my wife to get her dream job.

The ability to buy a nice house not located a 2 hour metra ride away from the loop made it way better. Im happy to be back.

That's a great point...if/when we run out of H2O in the desert, I may be forced to look at other options. Michigan would definitely look better, in that case...

  • Good question. Maybe a job that pays me double what I make right now and I only have to work 20 hours a week?

Even then, I don't know if I'd find it that appealing to actually live there.

I'm moving back to the Midwest in a few weeks after 5 years in PHX. Finding a job good was not a problem for us. For us, it came down to wanting to raise our kids in the Midwest and be closer to family and good friends.

  • I've lived in California, Colorado, and have been in Chicago 3 years now. My wife and I would love to move back to Michigan, and we'd take a pay cut to do it. We would probably move if we could find jobs making 2/3 of what we do now, assuming they were jobs with potential for growth and career development (neither of us like what we do now very much).

  • I've moved back to Michigan twice in my 20+ year career. Unfortunately, neither one has lasted. The first time around, my company was acquired and I was told to move to NJ. The second time, I took a big cut in pay and responsibility, just so I could be "home" and raise my kids in the same place I was raised. But the job didn't work out, so now I'm in TX.

I think I'm done with Michigan for a while, sadly. I love the state, but the job comes first.

Good luck to ya, Doc. 5 years is a good amount of time to try someplace else out. If you were to stay any longer, you might be too "desert-ized" to move out, like me...;)

  • Well, living in the Lansing/East Lansing area for 40 of my 41 years before I moved to TN. . . . . I love the place. I miss it terribly.

My wife. . . not so much.

SO, I would have to be making about 150k, 3-4 wks of vacation a year. And as close to a guarantee of continued employment as humanly possible. And they would have to assure that I dont get hung with my house in TN.

Thanks Vin. I hung out with ghost, al, and worm a few times, but it's too bad I never got to meet you.I like Phoenix a lot. It is hell from May through September, but it is paradise the rest of the year. 4 pro sports teams, ASU, hiking, great dining, golf courses, and five star resorts...the valley has a lot to offer. At the same time, we firmly believe that the Midwest is the best place to raise a family, and it is important to have family somewhat close(3hours).

Don't you think the water issue is going to become big in the not so distant future? I'd unload now and head for better parts before everyone else figures it out. The water situation in the SW is going to be dire.

We get our water from the same place Vegas and LA does. The only difference is we are upstream so when LA and Vegas dry up I will start to worry. Phoenix has vast reservoirs that protect their supply so water really isn't an issue at this point. The water levels go up and down.
