Microbrew lovers, chance to pay homage to a pioneer

  • Sam Adams just rolled out a limited release of a recreated New Albion Ale, brewed under the supervision of one of the pioneers of the microbrew business, Jack McAuliffe.
Met him at a tasting party last night, very good ale, humble guy.
Check out the story, look him up if he'll be in your area, SA is taking him around the country on tour. Whatever your opinion of Jim Koch, this is a very cool thing he is doing, giving all the profits from this release to Jack.

I saw the New Albion beer in Meijer the other day and wondered what that was all about (after seeing Sam Adams on the label).

And I don't have an opinion of Jim Koch other than his voice is really F'in annoying. Can't stand the ads I hear on the radio.

  • Cool.
I don't really understand the hate for Sam Adams or Jim Koch among the beer elite.

This. I visited the Sam Adams brewery last summer and he has a real love and passion for beer. Plus they give you a boatload of free samples. Sam Adams is OK in my book

Yup. I've done the brewery tour there too and they aren't shy with the free beer. Some interesting brewery exclusive beers when I was there, and everyone who worked there really knows their stuff.

  • If only there was a craft brew thread....

  • Great article. The California crafts (Sierra, Anchor, Red Tail) were the ones that got me headed in the right direction. While I try to stick with Michigan beers whenever possible, I still like to go back to these on occasion. Nice to know some of the backstory.

Thanks, that was my point of this post. At the time the US was down to 44 brewing companies and declining. It's very hard to imagine he made almost all his equipment from scratch, too bad he didn't make a little more capacity. He was a direct influence on the founder of Sierra Nevada and many others. Great story on origins of "Old Toe Sucker" ale, too.

  • this is a good beer... very sessiony... and i hate that word.

I bought some batteries, but they weren't included... so I had to buy them again. What do batteries run on?

  • Jack will be at Scotty’s Brewhouse and the Thr3e Wise Men Brewery and Pub in Indianapolis tonight and Indiana Brewers Guild Winterfest tomorrow, for anyone in the area. Check our for future appearances in Dallas, Chicago and others at his daughters web site. Taste a good beer and get some brewing tips from an expert.
I understand he is working on distilling now, too.

  • Usually not a fan of the Sam beers but I decided to pick up a six pack of New Albion Ale to give it a try. It's not great, but definitely not bad. Very nice.
