Microsoft Announces New Windows 8 Tablet - Surface

  • 10.6-inch Microsoft Surface tablets announced, powered by Windows 8 | The Verge

After days of speculation and rumors, Microsoft's major announcement has just been unveiled at a press event in Los Angeles: a Surface tablet. We suspected the company might be working on its own...

    Speculation on price?

"ARM version is similarly priced to other ARM (read: Android) tablets." I'm paraphrasing, but that's what they said. I'm guessing $299-399 for 32GB and $399-499 for 64GB. The need to subsidize it more, especially if Google comes out with the Nexus for $199. I'm almost wondering if they withheld pricing until after Google announces their price.

Have you used it? You could already try it and find out. It's not exactly a secret.

Tech analysts believe it will be considerably more expensive than the iPad. Microsoft says pricing will be similar to iPad. My guess is Microsoft won't make a lot of money on the first generation, to keep the price down and build a following.

  • Sounds cool, but no launch date / no price data is just stupid. I'll never understand why tech companies hold conferences and leave out the 2 most important things people care about : When can I buy one, and how much will it cost me.

Because they're waiting until Google I/O and the launch of the first Nexus tablet to decide how much they want to subsidize the price?

Why? There's nothing inherently different about the hardware here than the iPad. Apple makes a huge margin on the iPad, as demonstrated by how cheaply Android tablets can be sold for. If Microsoft wanted to sell these at cost, they'd start around $249 probably. If they want to subsidize them, they could probably get them down to $199 (though with a solid device, I don't see a need for this; I'd say $299 for the 32GB is about right).

Windows 8 is really cool on a tablet. Not so much on a normal PC.

I agree. I played around with it on my laptop and got annoyed, but I'm sure that with a touch screen it is pretty slick. I'm not sure if it's a product that people are just dying to use though. It certainly doesn't have the buzz of Windows 7.

I agree with this. Windows 8 looks cool and all, but the entire Metro paradigm makes no sense from a desktop perspective; people would have to buy completely new monitors for a feature that they likely wouldn't want to use anyway.

However...with THIS form factor...that makes things interesting. Priced correctly, and I could see how this is the beginning of where laptops and low-end desktops (and conversely, power-user tablet-users) evolve to. From a mobile perspective, what I see in Windows 8 makes a lot more sense than iOS, and in many regards, even Android.

I think it will be fine for pads but suck for PCs. I've had every Windows product (other than ME) since 95, and I have no desire to "upgrade" to Windows 8.

  • Anything by Microsoft is better than Apple's piece of shit operating system. I check market data every day and Apple doesn't even beat Vista in market share. How the hell am I supposed to enjoy my fucking Mac Book if no one else is buying the damned OS?

They don't have similar specs, software, or features, at all. And the 16GB iPad 2 is $427 on amazon.com. So, double your numbers.

Microsoft Surface vs Apple iPad: the battle of the specs | VentureBeat

Yes, we know the spec is dead. It's all about the user interface, the product ecosystem, the entire user experience of a product and a brand. But still. Here's a comparison of the new Microsoft Surface and the Apple iPad.

  • Two thoughts:
    1) Zunelet would be a sweet name for a tablet.
    2) More ammo for Steve Jobs & Apples' vision of a post-PC era.

Does that vision also include a comet and a special drink that would bring transcendence to the worshipers of Apple? Please tell me it does.

  • It's clear that Apple's "You want our OS then you must buy our device(s) has been a successful long term strategy. But that wasn't so when Apple Computer had 10% and less of the PC marketshare and there was no flash memory music player displacing Walkman. Once iPhone came out and was so popular it just exposed how Microsoft had become a vulnerable "software" company with limits to its revenue streams.

So Microsoft is coming way late to the party with a me three. I still think they should try to buy Nokia and/or RIM and make Windows Mobile along with Windows tablet closed .

Meanwhile Google buys Motorola Mobility and then has to promise China they won't make Android a closed OS.

  • Will it have flash support. Nothing more annoying than being unable to watch web content on your ipad. This is the reason I am probably not getting another ipad or an iphone.

Don't you know, it's all Adobe's fault. As long as you have someone to blame then Apple followers will put up with less content. Come on, they didn't have flash back in 2007 because "HTML5 is right around the corner and flash sucks." 5 years later....
