Mikail McCall to MSU?

  • Henry Gondorff said...

Given the fact that Dantonio agreed to bring back Keith Nichol after Nichol told him he would visit and then signed went to Oklahoma before ever taking a visit to MSU with Dantonio on the job, I wouldn't be so sure McCall is going to be shown the door if he shows contrition.

If Dantonio takes the hard line I'm sure Northern Illinois, IU and Jerry Kill up in the frozen tundra of Minnesota have already called or will be calling the McCall household tomorrow morning but I'm guessing Dantonio and staff have had conversations about McCall and whether to be accepting his apology.

Dantonio has shown time and again that he cares about folks a lot more than many posters here.

That's a very different situation. Nichol was never committed to Dantonio, he opened it up as soon as JLS was fired. Not to mention that Dantonio had no idea what he had in Cousins and Foles. Dantonio has a ton of young talent at RB, with Baker, Caper and Bell all proven talent...not to mention, a 2012 kid named Norfleet is an absolute stud and loves MSU.

A 5 star recruit at a position with unproven depth is going to get different treatment than a 3 star recruit who would be joining a crowded RB corps.

thanks for the insight there, champ. my guess is Ferentz didn't keep the offer after it turned out that Mikail wasn't willing to pick up a coke habit...

  • Someone from 247 did an interview with him after his visit to Iowa. The article is linked to McCall thread on Duffy D Board.

He loved Iowa but the Hawks signed a 4* back today

Yeah, it he seemed absolutely thrilled here:

"The visit went OK," McCall told Spartan Tailgate. "I'm going take a few more visits, I'll set those up on Monday. I'm not sure where yet."

Sad that his high school coach got him to jeopardize his commitment to MSU, then Iowa leaves him hanging once Coe committed. I guess that's an indicatin that Adam Robinson will have no more than the 1 game suspension for his failing grades and postive drug tests.

  • Have to disagree Jazzy.

I was told by people on the Lowell coaching staff that Nichol had told Dantonio he would get an official visit before signing since he was an early enrollee. Instead Nicholl went to Norman with his father and Coach Dean and much to his mother's dismay came home having already been signed up for Winter term classes at OU.

McCall may have screwed himself but none of us were privy to any conversations before or after the McCall to Iowa and subsequent reversal.. Given Dantonio's track record I believe he will give McCall a fair hearing and if he doesn't welcome him back will help him find another place to play football next fall.

If so top notch reporting by 24/7.

The scholarship being pulled was being reported by EVERYONE, not just 24/7.

That could be. I'm fine with it either way, those guys know more about what's going on than we do.

I do remember that Nichol told Dantonio he'd meet with him, but Stoops got him signed, sealed and delivered before it happened. I do recall that some folks weren't happy that he didn't at least wait to hear what Dantonio had to say.

In both situations, the kid is just trying to make sure he goes to the right place. I can respect that, but I can also respect a coach telling a kid that it's too late.

No matter how it ends, his high school coach seem to have over stepped their role here. They wanted him at Iowa, they got him to take a visit there, which cost him his spot at MSU, and now Iowa doesn't have an offer because something better came along.

The kid was blown away by his visit to MSU...he gave luke warm reports on his time at Iowa. Too bad his coaches couldn't just respect his wishes.

  • When I read stories like this it makes me think that one of the HS coaches were itching for an opportunity at Iowa and thought delivering McCall would somehow show Ferentz they could recruit.

  • if I were McCall, and I really wanted to go to MSU, I would camp out in coachd's driveway until he accepts my apology.

It could be, but Dantonio has been very clear since he got here that he doesn't push for commitments, and because of that, he expects them to be solid. There are plenty of other kids that would have liked to look around too, if only for the free trip. How can Dantonio tell those guys that they didn't get to be wined and dined, but McCall does?

I really don't want to open up a can of worms, but MD has accepted apologies and given 2nd chances for much worse. A 17 y/o kid got a little nervous, thanks to his jackass h.s. coach, about where he's going to spend the next, very important, 4/5 years of his life. If he apologizes and says the right things, let him on the team.

  • At this point maybe it's just better they go their separate ways. I'm not up to date on McCall or his recruitment, but he sounded like a good get. It's unfortunate that college recruiting is the way it is... from the way coaches talk about it now, the last 10 years have brought an excess of media attention to the point where every prospect has a "circle" or a posse the coaches have to infiltrate.

At some basketball programs (cough, Kentucky, cough) it'd be interesting to see exactly how much influence Cal really has ... I mean, does anyone even talk about how John Wall publicly mouthed off about him to the media last year? No one talks about that.

Cal might sit him... but then recruits might question whether they want to play for a coach that might hurt their NBA draft stock (which is all his recruits care about)

"Tonight, we show the world what this program is made of!" -- Brian Ellerbe on Mar 4, 2000, the night of scUM's 51-point loss to MSU.

  • I think we all agree that Coach is a really good guy and if the kid showed remorse over his visit to Iowa. Then Coach might consider another chance! However, will the kid make the effort to call Coach? We'll see! blank

  • Football recruiting is a two way street. Prospects use coaches, coaches use prospects.

MD handles it differently than most when it comes to the players who verbally commit, there is no looking around after you commit.

He seems like a good kid, and if he was to place a call to MD and said he screwed up, I would have no issue with MD taking him back.

The kid is 17-18 years old, and trusted his coach, who screwed him over. I would have run through the side of a moving bus for my HS coach when I played for him. We are talking about kids here, they are impressionable, and they screw up.

McCall needs to tell all his advisors to F off, and take control of his situation.

    This.

It's called moral hazard. What is to stop the next recruit from doing the same thing if MD bends to this kid?

I agree, we don't NEED this kid so it makes it that much easier to move on. The next recruit that tries to look around will think twice. McCall is now our poster boy for "once you commit, you better stay committed".

  • We should just make those kids get a Spartan branding/tattoo once they verbal to show their true loyalty until signing day.

The university is committing to this player. They assume he is coming. Dantonio isn't going to pull the offer if a stud shows interest in MSU. So why shouldn't the kid have a similar commitment?

Think of it as a job offer. Imagine if you were an employer and made an offer to someone and they accepted it. Then you found out they were still interviewing elsewhere, do you pull the offer? Do you offer again when they admit they can't find another job?

This kid has insulted MSU. Apparently the prospect of going to Iowa was worth more than having a solid invite to MSU.

Then again, maybe Dantonio is taking this opportunity to get a scholie back and get someone we actually need. All is fair when you don't play by the rules.

  • You're comparing apples to oranges. If MD were to take him back what's to stop the rest of the commits from looking around.

  • Yeah, I would never question Coach Dantonio, so how ever this works out is fine by me. However, if what people are saying about the Iowa visit is true, then I don't re-extend the offer if I am Coach D. You pride yourself on telling recruits that once they are committed they are solid and can't take trips, that if you take a trip, your offer is gone. Well here is a crystal clear example. If you want to tell recruits that they can't take visits in the future, then you have to be done with McCall here. I am sure Gholston and Thomas wanted to take trips, they played by the rules. McCall didn't. I hope everything works out for him, but I don't see it at MSU.
