Monty to Northern Illinois

  • Maybe Izzo goes outside, like he did with Wojick. Boylen's not coming, he can make 3 times in the NBA as an assistant than at MSU. We'll miss Monty more than people think. Very good recruiter and a better coach than people realize.

  • Stephens will have to redouble his efforts in the D along with Garland as the new guy gets settled in.

uh... not so ecstatic about that.

Always seemed "AAU fishy" too me.

Kind of a bold assumption to make.

hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.

  • I don't think Dawkins would step down from Saginaw High unless he had something already planned. I'm guessing Monty knew he was going to move up for some time and hopefully Dawkins has already been informed where he then made his decision. Saginaw High as an inner city school is a mess from top to bottom but Dawkins and his program were the lone pride. He seems to be as great of a person as he is a coach and it rubs off on players.

    My vote goes to Dawkins.

Is there somewhere we can submit our resumes? I know there are a lot of talented basketball coaches on tRCMB that would be perfect for the opening. Bring on zone defense and Byrd playing 40 minutes!

Blanch and Opti are already finalists for the job.

  • The search shouldn't be limited to HS coaches, ex-players or guys without current jobs...I know one current smaller school D-1 head coach who would jump at the chance to join Tom's staff, I'm sure there are more in the same position.

It wouldn't surprise me if Izzo goes this route partly b/c of the immense feeling he has for the guy losing his son. Sounds like something Izzo would do.

I have to agree. And with his kid passing away perhaps there is a special bond there with Izzo too.

  • Congrats to Mark and thanks for helping bring some great Spartan hoops memories as a player and coach.

Posting member of tRCMB since 1997. It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!

  • I still think Travis Walton should be given a shot if he wants it.

  • Once again, a black assistant coach is choosing to go elsewhere versus working under Tom Izzo. Verrrry suspicious.

Izzo is a compassionate guy, but he won't give Dawkins the job because of the tragic death of his son. The person who get the job will be the guy that Izzo believes can best move the program forward. If it's Dawkins, it'll be because of his coaching abilities, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is Dawkins. Then again, I also wouldn't be surprised if he goes after Boylen (to keep the continuity), Walton (former player, possibly groom him for the future), or someone from outside the program (bring in a new perspective after a disappointing season).

Best of luck to him. I've always felt that he's been a scapegoat on the RCMB. People get pissed and want somebody to blame... since Izzo has a lifetime pass, they just pass the criticism down the bench.

If any of the assistants needed to be held accountable, how about D. Stephens? The bigs have shown very little development or improvement during his run. Maybe not his fault, but part of his responsibilities? Just askin'.

Izzo's not going to fire an assistant. Stop it.

  • Don't you think we're all jumping the gun a little bit? All that is being reported is that he is the front runner and interviewing today. Nothing has been reported that he has taken the job.

And Izzo was never going to kick players off the team either...or so we thought...

Honestly, how do you as a fan evaluate the assistant coaches? Not trying to stomp on Stephens but if he is in charge of developing the bigs then it seems pretty clear somebodys not getting the job done....

All the coaches work with the bigs. Nix is Garland's project because he recruited him. Is it Garland's fault Nix can't keep his weight under control? So do you fire both Garland and Stephens? The assistant thing is a straw man. Izzo will not scapegoat an assistant by firing one. Just isn't going to happen. And there's no comparison to him kicking players off, unless the assistants are doing stupid things repeatedly like the Two Wise Men were.
