I'm honestly stunned. On the one hand, they scout us for info on Izzo, football, etc... And on the other they completely refuse to acknowledge our having fun and not being serious about things. They actually, actually ran that. In a real paper/paper website. That's insane. Anyone who read the Pro Combat thread saw the various ideas and photoshops going around and anyone who spends two minutes here knows that it is a lighthearted community.
The person who wrote that and edited/proofed it deserves to be canned and personally held liable for the downfall of the modern newspaper industry.

Regardless...so Trevor? Are you going to sue for royalties? If you created that logo, and the Freep used it without your permissions, you'd have a case.

Not really. If the owner of the rights to the logo wants to make a stink he can have it removed. Newspapers can try to pull the ambiguous fair use card, but they probably won't. As that usually becomes a mess. There is a reason why they give photo credits.
They use: "Special to the Free Press" for the credit. That's basically saying "We found this and do not think we can verify an owner...so we're running with it with the hope that the owner doesn't make a stink." As it's up to the owner of the exclusive rights to police their own material.
MSU, Nike, Trevor (assuming he owns the rights to the helmet logo) and whomever created the original compilation of images could all have the Free Press remove that picture if they wanted too....and if the Freep didn't comply, they could individually sue.
