My msu.edu email address - It Gone!

  • Natron tSpartan said...

    2003.

I don't even remember my login. I've been forwarding my email from msu.edu to gmail for about 8 years.

2001 here...and I just logged into my msu account last night for some reason.

I think they'd save a ton by cutting people that don't use it anymore while allowing people who do use it to continue.

  • You are receiving this message because you have been identified as someone who has not taken a course at Michigan State University in two or more years.

FWIW, there's over 300k accounts that will receive these emails.

    I hate you.

  • Damn - got nailed to. Thanks a lot Macks.

So, does this just eliminate the online mail system, or do I loose my msu.edu email address? I already import all email to Gmail - but do I need to notify senders to use my newer Gmail address?

The web client is, but I never use the web client. What am I missing? I've asked this before- not here- and never really received an answer.

U of M's email server was much, much, much, much better than MSU's, and I believe had 2 GB. They just upgraded to Google, and everyone gets 20 GB of space.

MSU's answer for why they haven't done this, is that the intellectual property cannot go to a 3rd party server, but all the universities with more research than MSU are doing exactly that.

OSU has been with hotmail for a couple years now, idk about other schools.
Edit: Even Harvard is on gmail.

  • This has been my primary email address for 13 years! I have always kept it because it makes me proud to have an msu email address. Do you know how many different websites and logins I have that use this email address? More than I can count. This is a huge inconveince to any alumni that use this as their primary email.

The price of storage is very cheap these days so why did it take 13 years to implement this? Has MSU really gotten this cheap? Personally, I would gladly pay to keep my email address.

The simple solution would be to send a link and have people verify that they are still using the email. You can remove anyone who isn't using the email address.

You are going to lose your msu email address completely.

It really does. Think about this. Assuming 300,000 deactivations of 1GB AFS + 512MB email space = ~440 TB of space freed.

Ok, so why not terminate just the AFS storage and cut the email storage space down to 256Mb? That still results in ~300+TB saved...75% more efficiency.

Or why not wax the accounts that have not been accessed or logged into for more than two years, and scale back the AFS and inbox storage of those that are still active. I'm guessing you could still increase efficiency by 80% or more, and still allow those who use the msu.edu email address to continue using it.

  • Another brilliant move by the university. I guess I have to change the email address for the crapload of accounts I set up prior to getting my gmail account.

If they want to kill my afs space, fine. If they want to kill my email storage, fine. But at least keep my mail address active and permit forwarding of incoming mail. Ridiculous.

You can't cut Email storage space. The logistic issues would cause mass hysteria.

Also, I'm willing to bet that most older grads have 256 MB, or even something ridiculous like 16 MB of AFS space.

  • I'm going to advocate for firing the email staff that came up with this plan. Next time msu calls asking for a donation tell them you would but you don't feel connected any more.

Assume you have 440 one tb hs at $100. That's 44k. If you get just 1% of emails pay $15 you save the same amount. Let people pay to maintain access and you take in cash along with encouraging donations and having a huge listvserv.

You're a Moran if you dont think some of our ag or nuke sci profs have more important info than a classics prof at Harvard.

I'm not sure how getting rid of 2+ year removed alumni accounts does anything to solve this problem.

Edit: tracing back, I get it.

Amen, I always planned on donating to MSU when I had the means too, but next time they call this will definitely be something that's in the back of my mind.

That's hogwash. Companies clean out inboxes and mail storage all the time.

Cancel AFS space for non MSU students or staff. That's 300 TB of space savings there.

For inboxes, cancel all accounts that haven't been logged into or used within the past 2 years. Repeat the audit cycle every year to keep storage under control, or program some sort of cron job that can notify and cancel expired accounts on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

To trim down the boxes to smaller storage space, run a deletion filter starting with the oldest files forward until the storage limit is reached. Give users time (as they are now) to migrate or save their old stuff and clean out their boxes.

I'm not knowledgable about MSU's IT processes and procedurees, but if both storage and the cost thereof are considerations, it seems like they would have built in some sort of automated process to manage this before it got to 300,000 excess accounts.

  • I got hit too - graduated in 2007. Thankfully, I've migrated most of my logins.

  • The odd thing is that MSU is basically eliminating one known contact source for many alumni. Might make contacting alumni for donations slightly more difficult.
