My take from being in Columbus Sunday

  • 1. The hallways at Nationwide are super narrow and conjested, but above average concessions.
    2. The Billikens had a cool fan playing the trumpet in the stands, first time i have seen that.
3.CJ Leslie from NC State can jump out of the gym, but has a definate aura about him of being a head case.
    4. The MSU fan section was in fact loud, and super well represented. We sat in section 20, right behind the pep band, and over a hair. Very involved fans, and my wife is hoarse this morning.
    5. MSU is a team that is very, very confident. It was extremely evident at all the key points in the game. Execution was crisp when it needed to be, and everybody is accountable.
    6. Izzo, IMO, looked to be thinking ahead to this week. He substituted quite heavily, especially for Appling, or so it seemed. He was on the bench a good bit going right down to the end of the half. It was almost as if the coaching staff wanted to keep St Louis at arms length and substituted freely to maintain that. A fine balance that was pulled off splendidly i thought.
    7. Wood i thought played extremely well again, that baseline drive was a thing of beauty.
    8. This team i think is better overall than the team that beat Louisville in Indy( a game i attended). Better inside post play, and take care of the ball better. Just much crisper and tighter.
    9. This Louisville team isnt as good as the 09 Louisville team was.
    10. I avoided the tornado, and maded it out of the torrential rains.

    11. I drove back thinking the same thing i have thought since about the first part of December. Florida scares me, i hope Marquette knocks them out. The sort of team that doesnt always answer the bell, but when they do....

    Edit.. 12
Majerus is an outstanding coach, good guy, and was very nice in his comments RE MSU after the game. SLU played very well and its a compliment to him and his kids. Truly an excellent X and O guy.

  • Why does Florida scare you. They knocked off Virginia with only 7 scholarship players and Norfolk St.

Exactly, I don't get why teams should fear them either. They are essentially UM with their shot selection & game plan.

I'm not sure I'd put him as one of the best in the country, but it doesn't matter when we have the best coach in the country on our sidelines. King1

They have better perimeter shooters who are more athletic than scUM,and a better more athletic post player by far.
They get hot, they are scary good.

I would be very surprised if Florida doesnt beat Marquette, you heard it here first. A lot of people thought they wouldnt beat UVA, who did beat UM this year. And they throttled them.
Remember what two or three year ago, one of those FF teams lost to a so/so Florida team on i think a neutral court.
Not saying they would beat MSU, but i consider it very possible they could. They scared me more than anybody in the West regional.

If you have watched Florida over the years, they are one of those teams who can play poorly for a lengthy stretch of games, then seemingly get it together and be world beaters for several weeks.
They appear to be to be on one of those dangerous upticks right now.

This..I actually have UF playing us in the Elite Eight in a few of my brackets. Donovan is a coach that knows how to get to the Final Four / Elite Eight and he had a good team last year. The Rosario transfer is playing well right now and they are getting hot at the right time. If they do beat Marquette we should expect much of the same in preparation as Louisville. I think that is the advantage we get with playing Florida in the Elite Eight. Donovan runs the same stuff as Pitino.

There will be ice below the court at the East Regionals this weekend as well.

    4. The MSU fan section was in fact loud, and super well represented. We sat in section 20, right behind the pep band, and over a hair. Very involved fans, and my wife is hoarse this morning.

We kept moving around in both games, both to get better seats and to find more MSU fans to sit with. I thought the MSU contingent was very quiet and small. I was expecting us to own the place. Oh well, we tried.

The subbing was because of fouls. Izzo all season (every season) has benched anyone with 2 fouls in the first half, and Appling, Thornton, and Nix all had 2 fouls. And then the foul totals went up in the 2nd half. I'm sure Izzo would have had no reason to risk a loss by resting guys on a Sunday game with a Thursday game next up.

My main impressions from Columbus are:

MSU runs the tightest warm-up drills of the 8 teams that played.
Green just exudes bad-ass alpha dog.
There can be real asshole fans for any and every school, even ours.
NC St. is the best 11-seed the tourney has seen in awhile.
Georgetown needs a coach who can help the offense function at least a little bit.
I'm a convert to believing in Trice's longterm upside. It's hard to explain why, since he didn't have great games, but there's something from watching him live that shows a talent there that watching on tv doesn't show.
