NATO taking over Chicago

  • ri.fle.fl. said...

the u.s, in conjunction with NATO, has not been embroiled in an almost ten year long, essentially pointless war in godforsaken afganistan, so what is there to protest? obviously the participants in said protest must be crazy, ("comedy gold"). cuz war is cool, doesn't hurt anyone.

I think it is because they are dressed like superheroes and stagecoach robbers.

45 arrests today, cops looking like they had the protestors boxed in.all day, the Boeing march should be intrrestig tomorrow

It's kind of funny isn't it. The cops order the crowd to disperse, then surround them so they can't , then arrest them for not obeying orders. Wait, maybe that isn't funny after all?

Take it to Wells, but protests like this accomplish absolutely nothing but put fools on the street up on a stage.

Protester interviews are comedy gold. "NATO is evil and responsible for war crimes."

    What is funny about that?

I am afraid that the whole world is closer to moral foreclosure.

Because it's stupid. NATO is the greatest military alliance in world history. It's especially unique for being a military alliance dedicating to promoting peace and freedom throughout the world.

I'm certainly open to discussing whether NATO forces have committed war crimes. I wouldn't reject it out of hand. Not sure if that would then make the organization "evil".

It's very easy to laugh off statements that don't fit into our beliefs, I'm guilty of it, too.

I am afraid that the whole world is closer to moral foreclosure.

    Dirk Hardpeck

  • I would be interested in knowing what war crimes one would accuse NATO of committing. If an organization that large and powerful is capable of committing said war crimes, and not individual soldiers/small units, we are in big trouble. It's the age-old failed logic of over generalizing (e.g. black people commit crimes).

Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons.

    Spartan Grunt

  • Yeah!! Protest NATO!!! Cause it's evil and stuff!

    Ridiculous.

Military power is not evil in and of itself and knee jerk protesting of the military only hurts the very causes that the protesters value because they make reasonable policy objections look foolish by association.

NATO only acts when the member countries agree and has prevented far more wars than it has ever been involved in. How about using this energy to elect representatives and draw attention to specific policies with which you disagree.

They weren't "boxed in". Assuming you are talking about the protesters at Michgan/Cermak yesterday afternoon the protesters could've turned around and walked away at any time. Cermak was wide open to the west.

Many protesters chose to do just that and avoided confrontations with the cops. Those that refused to leave got arrested.

I honestly don't see how the cops could've handled that situation any better than they did.

This. The cops deliberately left an exit for the protesters. Some protesters were smart and left. Others decided to throw stuff and taunt the cops. I know a few tried to throw a metal guardrail at the cops. A few champions of society decided to try and charge through the cops or dive over them.

The cops did a great job showing restraint.

  • Not going to lie, I was kind of hoping that they would fire up the LRAD yesterday, just to see if it would actually work. lol

I don't think the cops were really planning to use it (or tear gas) and just had it out there as a threat, but I wonder if it would've been effective?

To be fair, ELPD would have incited a riot by launching every cannister of teargas in their arsenal. CPD was a lot more restrained.

it would've made for good tv

the only winners in the whole deal were the networks covering the event

    - and the one or two cops that finally got to swing their club

we started the fires before they shot the tear gas

the first volley was to protect the fire dancing idiots from themselves when the gas tank was about to blow up

There were a couple good moments on TV. The idiots who threw the guardrail at the cops and the few protesters that tried to charge the cops were pretty funny.

In 2005 ELPD went absolutely apeshit. There was a gathering of people with no violence whatsoever and ELPD launched an absolutely absurd amount of teargas.
