NATO taking over Chicago

It's telling that you think the cops are the ones that decided McCormick Place was off-limits to the general public this weekend.

Do you also think the cops belong to NATO?

its all the same, they are all working for the corporations man...being all corporationy and keeping the 99% down

  • Protesters seem bored today too.
Big protest at Boeing earlier, now they're just wandering around the loop aimlessly.

Fine, the storm troopers were simply carrying out the orders of their overlords who decided that the public wouldn't be allowed into a public place thereby suppressing the First Amendment rights of the general public.

And I don't know if the cops belong to NATO or not. If the Coast Guard can be considered part of it, maybe the cops can be federalized and ordered to fight too. To be honest about it, I really don't care.

You really have no idea how the government/NATO/world works...
You have no legitimate argument, so you just spout off indignation and rage that you can't formulate into coherent thoughts so you throw out inflammatory phrases like storm troopers, and overlords while hiding behind misperceived notions of what the 1st amendment means

No, according to the article, the cops started the violence, not the protesters. So I win.

Really? From the very beginning of the article:

"Several thousand protesters spent five hours peacefully chanting, singing and marching against war. At the end, nearly 40 young veterans dramatically took their military medals and hurled them toward McCormick Place, where world leaders met behind closed doors.

It was supposed to end there — at Michigan and Cermak.

But a “Black Bloc” of about 100 anarchists wanted something else. The group, which chanted “What do we want? Dead cops!” as it left Grant Park at 2 p.m., surged to the front of the protest crowd and tried to break through the imposing line of Chicago cops in riot gear blocking its path."

Yep, certainly sounds like the cops started the violence.

The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.

I guess you have never heard that reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions may be placed on free speech?

"The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees Freedom of Speech. This guarantee generally safeguards the right of individuals to express themselves without governmental restraint. Nevertheless, the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment is not absolute. It has never been interpreted to guarantee all forms of speech without any restraint whatsoever. Instead, the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that state and federal governments may place reasonable restrictions on the time, place, and manner of individual expression. Time, place, and manner (TPM) restrictions accommodate public convenience and promote order by regulating traffic flow, preserving property interests, conserving the environment, and protecting the administration of justice."

Wrong again. Cops were carrying out orders to not allow large crowds into a secure space.

Protesters were free to exercise their first amendment rights all over the loop, all weekend long.

Also, McCormick Place is not a "public place". It is routinely used for private events that the general public cannot access. This weekend's NATO summit is no different.

I haven't seen too many people in this thread successfully explain NATO. While you can make a good argument for NATO, you can make an equally - if not better - argument for ending the alliance. And the latter has nothing to do with war crimes.

It's not about whatever is being discussed at the NATO summit. It's essentially a guaranteed platform to spout whatever crazy message they want, and they know it will get exposure.

The First Amendment says the government cannot censor speech. Protest is speech. The government decided that ordinary citizens couldn't protest on public property and attempted to illegally block access to public property. The fact that you approve of the storm trooper tactics doesn't mean you are right. Did you also approve of the Kent State killings?

    Wrong again.

McCormick Place is not open to the public this weekend.
The protesters were given the entire loop area, including the ability to block streets otherwise open to traffic to protest as long as they wanted.

There was no restriction of free speech.

Protesters could protest throughout downtown Chicago all weekend long. They just couldn't go into McCormick Place, which was closed to the public this weekend.

Right. The overlords decided to not allow the pubic in a public place. That is what I said. Now, please show me the part of the First Amendment that says that the government can restrict free speech to certain places and times. TIA.

McCormick Place was not open to the general public this weekend, and is not normally open to the general public.

You are confusing freedom of speech with freedom to attend a private event that you are not invited to.

You have no more right to enter McCormick Place today than you do to enter the White House whenever you want. Neither infringes on your right to free speech though.

what part of "McCormick Place is not a public place" is so difficult for you to understand?

Per phil crackin, McCormick Place is not open to the public this weekend. So it is open to the public every other day and therefore a public place except this weekend. The powers that be decided to restrict the public's access because they wish to restrict the free speech rights of the protesters. Sort of like what dubya did to people who wanted to protest his administration.
