NCAA issues sanctions over N. Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" name

  • All things considered, the first wave of sanctions issued against North Dakota aren't too bad, particularly when you consider that UND's directly defying the NCAA's decision. That said, if this thing goes on any longer, I'm sure the NCAA will start pulling men's hockey scholarships, which could be a big issue when you consider how hockey is UND's cash cow. The NCAA will eventually hit UND where it hurts.

Anyway, the first wave of sanctions...
1.) No UND team can host an NCAA event. (Tournament games, regionals, exc.)
2.) No "Sioux" imagery or logos at NCAA tournament events.
3.) If UND defies the second requirement to not have "Sioux" imagery at NCAA events, UND must forfeit those athletic contests and reimburse any NCAA travel aid.

Below: An article from USCHO.com. The article contains the actual letter. (Edit: The formatting was looking kind of funky here.)

  • Wait, I thought the local Sioux tribe has given them their blessing? If that is the case the NCAA needs to go away and start looking into teams that violate other rules like paying players and other extra benefits. What a joke. UND will get in more trouble for a long time mascot that the local tribe is cool with then OSU, USC and Miami for their violations.

Edit: It seems like some tribes are split on the issue.

However what about the fighting Irish?

IIRC, there are two tribes in North Dakota that associate themselves with the Sioux nation. One said yes to UND, and the other said no.

  • Excellent.

I hope UND sues the NCAA and this leads to the shattering of that organization. Then, the major conferences can form a new association.

  • This is what the NCAA has come to? Actually sanctioning a small school for its name? While big schools get away with actual crimes? clap indian peace

1 of the tribes said it was OK but the other one didn't. I think the other tribe said no just to oppose the first tribe.
Isn't there a bill or a vote soon that will require the school to keep the name?

That should settle it right there. The NCAA should not be taking sides in this civil disagreement between the tribes. If they allow other schools to have their mascots with tribe blessings, then the tribe that approves should suffice.

Let's hope the NCAA shatters over this...

Yep...hopefully this sparks the downfall of that association.

  • A. Allen and KamState yeah I just read that. Still seems like something the NCAA should stay out of. If the tribes have an issue they can take the issue with the State, seeing it is a public institution and if it is an problem the state could cut funding.

  • I didn't read the article but which tribe is in favor, Cheyenne River Sioux or Oglala sioux? A friend of mine is Sioux and I asked him about this a few months ago and he didn't care

EDIT: those two Sioux tribes are in south Dakota

  • The North Dakota legislature passed a bill in November, 2011 that allowed the UND to drop the Fighting Sioux nickname; but they don't have to.

Here's a good article on the issue and what supporters of keeping the nickname hope to accomplish.

Two petitions begin to keep North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname - ESPN

Two initiative campaigns begun Tuesday would let voters decide whether the University of North Dakota should keep its Fighting Sioux nickname in spite of penalties by the NCAA, which considers it offensive to American Indians.

  • We were in N Dakota for Thanksgiving and drove up to Grand Forks to have a looksee. The word was that UND was going to get rid of the nickname. On the streets of Grand Forks and just over the border in Minnehaha, folks were out in force wearing the logo. They're pretty passionate about it. Going to be a battle.

"Spirit Lake members backed the nickname during a reservation referendum. The Standing Rock reservation has not had a vote, and its tribal council has repeatedly opposed the Fighting Sioux name."

no, the second one has been pushing for the end of the name due to multiple broken agreements between the university and the tribe which led to their consent many years ago.

  • Those sanctions don't seem severe to you? They appear quite severe to me.

No home sporting events, immediate forfeiture if they continue to defy the NCAA, loss of all funds?

    They're going to back down.

    They're going to back down.

No home sporting events sanctioned by the NCAA: In other words, NCAA tournament regional games and whatnot. And they can get around the other two sanctions if they wear generic stuff without the Native American iconography at NCAA tournament events.

It's an inconvenience, but could be much worse. If the NCAA starts pulling athletic scholarships - which I believe they will if this quarrel continues - then, yes, it's a big problem.

I don't know if they'll back down but I was thinking those sanctions were pretty severe too.

The Native American Indian tribes complain how they have been pushed into oblivion, let they can't vote to keep their name alive?

  • Well membership in the NCAA is voluntary, but once you join you must abide by the rules. They know the rules and out of stubbornness actually passed a bill forcing them to break it. Also one of their huge boosters aid he wouldn't give his money if they changed the name.

I always thought what's the harm, it'd be cool if there were a team called the Fighting Kushites or Raging Axums (ancient African nations). But then then I pictured some drunk frat boy in black face hopping around with a spear and a loin cloth and I can see where some Native Americans might be offended by these names.

BTW, the Kingdom of Kush must've fell from smoking on that drough all the time. drumsThank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.
