NHL to complete sale of Phoenix Coyotes today

  • Looks like they will be staying in Glendale, but there looks to still be hurdles to overcome like hammering out an arena lease deal.

EDIT: Not completed today, just announced.

Phoenix Coyotes sale announcement expected Monday, according to report - ESPN

A person with knowledge of the situation says a tentative deal by the NHL to sell the Phoenix Coyotes to former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison is expected to be announced before Monday night's playoff game against the Nashville Predators.

  • Cool to see for me having spent many years there. But seriously, no one in Phoenix gives a damn about the 'yotes, even with their success this year. Many people there are transplants, and have prior allegences. Phoenix is, and will always be a basketball town, with the Suns taking the cake. Even the recent success of the Cardinals hasn't showed much in terms of fandom. Like i said, cool to see, but if (when) the Coyotes reach the Western Conference cellar, they'll be back to square one.

His wet dream is LA versus Phoenix in the Western Conference Finals and LA versus New York in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Admittedly, it would be phenomenal for the league.

I would watch. Then again, I'll watch anyway because I am rooting for LA.

Should have built the arena downtown or in north Scottsdale.

Both the arenas for the Cardinals and the Coyotes are great facilities, but both are in Glendale. That's not a huge problem for football because most of the games are on Sunday afternoon. It's a huge problem for hockey. The hockey fan base mostly lives in Northeast Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the East Valley (Tempe, Mesa). The hockey arena (Jobing.com) is 30-35 miles from where most of the fans live.

The Coyotes should have located downtown by the Diamondbacks park (Chase Field) and the Suns' arena (US West Arena) or on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Reservation where the Diamondbacks spectacular new spring-training facility is located. Of course Glendale threw millions of dollars at the team and is even subsidizing the arena. If the sale goes through, it will include ongoing subsidies from Glendale's suffering taxpayers. Poor Glendale built the Coyotes arena with almost no contribution from the developer or the team. The City is also paying $25 million/year to the NHL as an annual subsidy. Then, the sale will likely include continuing subsidies. All this is from a town with only 250,000 residents.

  • Stop making sense...it's much easier for our friends in Michigan to simply think that "hockey can't work in the desert"...without fully understanding the politics and demographics of the area.

Now they might actually have to think....

Many didn't think the Suns would make it either. The Jets/Coyotes have not been a winning franchise since they moved to the NHL in the late 70's. This made if very difficult for them to gain any traction in a non traditional hockey market. There are a ton of Hockey fans in Phoenix, just not Coyotes fans. If this franchise can become somewhat competitive and get the right owner in place they can definately make it and that is what Greg Jamison sees. The venue is terrific so it will be interesting to see how they do next year after having the franchise's best year ever plus the 3 year ownership issue finally resolved. They have never had both at the same time.

  • Will they continue to charge more for Red Wings tickets than for any other games? The games rock when the Wings are in the house, but most are Wings fans.

Agree they should not have built the arena in Glendale, but my understanding is they had no room downtown. They did have land in South Scottsdale (McDowell and Scottsdale Rd) which would have been perfect, but the deal fell through and they ended up building an ASU extention there.

To the poster who recommended North Scottsdale...that would be like building a Red WIngs arena in Bloomfield Hills and wouldn't be financially possible and would never receive approval from the city.

They went with the easiest place to build which was Glendale and I think that was a mistake.

The latest prospective new owner apparently is short on $$ to complete the purchase. In other words, the same situation as it's been the last 3 years, with that idiot Bettman still claiming Phoenix is a viable hockey market.

Bettman is an idiot. He should have let the Coyotes move back to Winnipeg. Instead he sold out Atlanta.
