NHLPA agrees to realignment proposal

Meh... scum fans think their team is good, too. Can't stand the Wings... Never could. Can't stand that they've labeled themselves Hockeytown, like Hockey is any more important there than it is in Honolulu. There is a small contingent of the city that even knows the rules of the game. I'd label Yellowknife a better hockey town.

Pro sports aren't about "town" around here. It's about state. Yes the city of Detroit sucks, but I and many others will always identify with the wings. One of the most successful franchises in sports.... arguably the best in the past 15 years.

  • As a Hawks fan, I can't blame Wings fans for being excited for more Original 6 games within their division. I would be too.

That being said, it appears that the unspoken obvious setup is expansion in the future. We will see where that leads.

I'll agree, but why would Detroit try to label itself as Hockeytown, when it (hockey) is only 3rd in popularity in the city. Just dumb to anyone outside the fan base. Loved a lot of players that wore a Wings jersey, but can't stand the team or much of its fan base.

What is wrong with it? I'm not personal when it comes to Detroit teams. I don't like the Lions (probably the worst organization in pro sports), or pistons. Don't care for baseball, but I will cheer for the Tigers when they play.

It's the most successful team in the city, bar none. 4 (wow, I'm an idiot for not remembering 02) Championships in the last 15 years. Playoff appearance streak at 21 years. 12 years in a row of 100+ pts. The last back-to-back Champions in hockey. It made sense at the time they did it (97-98) and it has stuck since. Basically, nobody has had enough success to take it away from us. You want to be Hockeytown? Be better than us. Consistently...I'm not talking about one year.

    That's why.

That's 4 championships in the last 16 years!!!

If Seattle gets a team, it makes sense to bring back one of the greatest names and logos in all of Hockey.

    The Seattle Whalers!!!!

While I agree on the name, they can't do that. The city of Hartford technically owns the rights to the name. Doubtful that they'd let a team not in Hartford use the name.

A little sad to see the Blackhawks-Wings rivalry go, but the benefits outweigh the negatives here I think. Perhaps my interest in hockey will be rekindled a little bit.

A Hawks-Wings Cup Finals would be epic.

The Blackhawks/Blues Rivalry with the Red Wings was always secondary to the Detroit - Toronto rivalry growing up. That used to be one of the best rivalries in sports. I'm glad it's going to be back at any expense.

It's hard to miss Chicago, when you're picking up TOR, MON, & BOS. Just typing that ... makes me tingle.

And really, the Chicago rivalry only started getting interesting again the last couple years, there was no rivalry for the longest time.

Suck it Blackhawks, nothing would make me happier than raising the cup in front of your stupid fans.

I'm not sure that's correct. Karmanos was allowed to use the Whalers name for the Plymouth Whalers after he moved them to Carolina without issue.

Danbury, CN of the FHL uses the Whalers name/logo too. But they aren't too far from Hartford.

If Seattle gets a team I'd think they'd just take the Tradition Seattle hockey club name: The Metropolitans. i.e. the First American based team to win the Stanley Cup.

You're referencing teams that are not in the NHL. There was some shit about it a couple years ago when the Wolfpack wanted to change their name and Hartford threw a fit about it. I believe if a team in the NHL wants to use it, they have to go through the city of Hartford and get clearance. I could be wrong but that's what I remember from the issue a couple years ago.

Really, really doubt there will be a team in Las Vegas. They'd go to Hamilton before LV, simply because of sound business principles. It would be absolutely impossible to keep a stable fanbase in LV. As dumb as Bettman is, I fail to believe he's that stupid.

The issue arose recently with the Thrashers moving to Winnipeg, and wanting to be named the Jets.

Normally, it would have had to be OK'd by Phoenix (the old Jets), but since the team is owned by the NHL (way to go Bettman), the league didn't prevent it from going through.

Now the moving franchise (phoenix) can always leave the name with the city as a part of the negotiation on the way out of town (think this happened with the sonics and browns in other leagues), but generally, the name/logo, etc. is owned by the franchise not the city.

I figured that since Karmanos bought the team, he owns the name...which is why he uses it for the Plymouth Whalers. He owned the name at the time he purchased the franchise as he didn't automatically move them. I though the IP of the franchise went to him.

I don't think they had a Browns like agreement with Hartford. The franchise wasn't in that position with the league/community to have that kind of pull.

what rivalry? you think wings fans care about a "rivalry" with an original 6 team tied for the least amount of cups with NY? nope. bring on the Habs and Leafs EVERY year!!! and play them more than once, then throw in the likes of boston, pitt, philly drool

This is the most ignorant post I have seen in a long time. While the whole "Hockeytown" moniker is purely a marketing tool, people refer to the three "M's" in USA hockey......Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts. As you clearly don't know anything about the demographics of hockey in the USA, you should avoid posting on the issue. Better to remain silent and let people think you are an idiot than to post and remove all doubt.

Like I said....I could be wrong. But I think he bought the team, which was already in existence prior to his ownership, and the rights for the name stayed with the city. It was a really unique situation, and also why, up until a couple years ago, the Whalers jerseys couldn't be used in NHL video games. Hartford wouldn't sign off on it.

At least that's how I remember it.

And, again, that may only be applicable to an NHL franchise. Non-competing leagues (minors, juniors, etc.) may not be restricted.
