Meh... scum fans think their team is good, too. Can't stand the Wings... Never could. Can't stand that they've labeled themselves Hockeytown, like Hockey is any more important there than it is in Honolulu. There is a small contingent of the city that even knows the rules of the game. I'd label Yellowknife a better hockey town.

I'll agree, but why would Detroit try to label itself as Hockeytown, when it (hockey) is only 3rd in popularity in the city. Just dumb to anyone outside the fan base. Loved a lot of players that wore a Wings jersey, but can't stand the team or much of its fan base.

It's the most successful team in the city, bar none. 3 Championships in the last 15 years. Playoff appearance streak at 21 years. 12 years in a row of 100+ pts. The last back-to-back Champions in hockey. It made sense at the time they did it (97-98) and it has stuck since. Basically, nobody has had enough success to take it away from us. You want to be Hockeytown? Be better than us. Consistently...I'm not talking about one year.
That's why.

I'm not sure that's correct. Karmanos was allowed to use the Whalers name for the Plymouth Whalers after he moved them to Carolina without issue.
Danbury, CN of the FHL uses the Whalers name/logo too. But they aren't too far from Hartford.
If Seattle gets a team I'd think they'd just take the Tradition Seattle hockey club name: The Metropolitans. i.e. the First American based team to win the Stanley Cup.

Really, really doubt there will be a team in Las Vegas. They'd go to Hamilton before LV, simply because of sound business principles. It would be absolutely impossible to keep a stable fanbase in LV. As dumb as Bettman is, I fail to believe he's that stupid.

You're referencing teams that are not in the NHL. There was some shit about it a couple years ago when the Wolfpack wanted to change their name and Hartford threw a fit about it. I believe if a team in the NHL wants to use it, they have to go through the city of Hartford and get clearance. I could be wrong but that's what I remember from the issue a couple years ago.

A little sad to see the Blackhawks-Wings rivalry go, but the benefits outweigh the negatives here I think. Perhaps my interest in hockey will be rekindled a little bit.
A Hawks-Wings Cup Finals would be epic.

This is the most ignorant post I have seen in a long time. While the whole "Hockeytown" moniker is purely a marketing tool, people refer to the three "M's" in USA hockey......Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts. As you clearly don't know anything about the demographics of hockey in the USA, you should avoid posting on the issue. Better to remain silent and let people think you are an idiot than to post and remove all doubt.

I figured that since Karmanos bought the team, he owns the name...which is why he uses it for the Plymouth Whalers. He owned the name at the time he purchased the franchise as he didn't automatically move them. I though the IP of the franchise went to him.
I don't think they had a Browns like agreement with Hartford. The franchise wasn't in that position with the league/community to have that kind of pull.
