NHLPA agrees to realignment proposal

what rivalry? you think wings fans care about a "rivalry" with an original 6 team tied for the least amount of cups with NY? nope. bring on the Habs and Leafs EVERY year!!! and play them more than once, then throw in the likes of boston, pitt, philly drool

The Wings-Leafs rivalry used to be intense, hard core hatred involved between the cities/franchises.

Conn Smyth and James Norris did not get along since Norris proposed a move of Ottawa to Toronto before the Redwings existed. Smyth blocked him, and Norris was allowed buy the Redwings a few years later and use to try to undermine Conn Smyth as much as he could. \

It may even predate that...some conspiracy theorist suggest that Conn Smyth had the league force the Detroit Cougers to fire and trade Canadian War Hero and hockey star and Detroit head coach Art Duncan to the newly purchased (by Smyth) and renamed "Maple Leafs" franchise in order to boost the value of franchise. It back fired when Detroit responded by hiring Jack Adams as a replacement.

Regardless of all that, a hatred developed between the two fan bases (especially in Windsor where there is a pretty good split of fans of both teams living side by side) during the Original 6 era as the team met each other for the Stanley Cup 7 times between 1936 and 1964.

Like I said....I could be wrong. But I think he bought the team, which was already in existence prior to his ownership, and the rights for the name stayed with the city. It was a really unique situation, and also why, up until a couple years ago, the Whalers jerseys couldn't be used in NHL video games. Hartford wouldn't sign off on it.

At least that's how I remember it.

And, again, that may only be applicable to an NHL franchise. Non-competing leagues (minors, juniors, etc.) may not be restricted.

You can use the Hartford Jerseys for Carolina in NHL 11

No shit. Did you not read what I wrote? "Up until a couple years ago." It was a HUGE deal for NHL gamers when they actually put the jerseys in. Prior to the first game they were in, can't remember if it was '11 or earlier, Hartford did not sign off and the jerseys could not be used.

Cleary did not. I odn't expect Seatlle to be named the Whalers. They have no tie to thefranchise or the city unlike the Browns and Jets. They will probably be somehting stupid like the Rain or somehting like that.

Massachusetts doesn't count because the Red Sox are more popular than the Bruins. wink_msu

On tRCMB it does, I guess. The Wings are only the 3rd or possibly 4th most popular team in Detroit, but gets their city labeled Hockeytown. I know the majority of you are Wings fans and I expect you to defend it, but just wanted to make sure you knew it was outrageous. Actually glad to see some people stand up because I don't meet many fans of the game in the States. In any case, I still hate Detroit and always will.

And when people speak of the Senators in Detroit, people will always respond, "who?"

    Have a great day.

Former... but honestly, are the Pistons, Lions, and Tigers not more popular? I guess you could argue the Pistons aren't, because of their tough season, but in general I wouldn't say I'm exaggerating.

Tigers, Wings, Lions, everything else. At least, that is how I've always seen it. I hate agreeing with blanche, but find me a better team and city who supports them in the US.

In the US, I guess you could be right. But I wasn't insinuating that Hockeytown should be within US borders at all. It would be like Calgary naming themselves Footballtown. Most people would find that laughable, and for good reason. I would point out, though, that Boston or maybe even Buffalo could lay better claim in the US. I think those towns have a larger following percentage wise. It's obviously not something official and doesn't really matter in the grand scheme... I was just pointing out something that irks me about Detroit.

rumor There's an implied 'USA' after Hockeytown. Trust me, I worked for the team. We just don't say it.

  • Alright, I didn't mean to hijack, and for the most part you guys dont represent the bad parts of the fanbase I'm used to. Then again, you are Spartans and know what it's like to have to deal with pompous fans (in AA). Glad to see fans of the game. When I came to MI as a boy, I couldn't find a pair of skates to save my life. I was scarred by the experience.

Dude, what part of MI? I great up in Metro Detroit and I've skated since I was 2. Played all over the state. Did you come to the backwoods up around Gaylord?

  • It should be remembered when the Term Hockeytown came around. Minnesota had no team, Boston was shit and the Wings were at least the 2nd biggest team in town maybe even rivaled the Lions. I think the Hockeytown label is a little pretentious and the song is awful, but it's a cool center ice logo and one of the greatest films ever made. Hanta Yo Baby.

I would agree with this...and I think it is pretty clear that the reference is limited to USA. Again, it's a marketing stunt and taking it literally is foolish.

That being said, hockey is big in Michigan, relatively speaking, for the USA. Minnesota is far and away the biggest hockey region (I believe they refer to themselves as "The State of Hockey"). As you noted, Minnesota was operating without an NHL team for a while so Detroit seized the opportunity.....crafty business move.

It's obvious you're just making crap up to try to prove your point. That or you hung out in some of the most downtrodden areas of Michigan (still some hockey there, but needing a stick and skates for everyone playing is more of an expense than only needing a single ball among a group of people).

No, Lansing. Well... DeWitt at first. Only skates I ended up finding were at the pro shops at the Summit and The Arc (when it was called that). Played for a bit but only in town because the sport is too damn expensive here and couldn't afford travel and all that. Ended up playing lacrosse as an alternative (National Sport of Canada for those trivia buffs out there).

Curious, because I've never been to Canada more than for a weekend tournament. How is the sport any less expensive in Canada?

The problem with street hockey or pond hockey around here is less about expense and more about the amount of people that want to play. Obviously, you can get a game of hoops going with no problem, but kids aren't raised to play street or pond hockey a lot here. My own personal issue was that when I was young my family couldn't afford it. As others suggested, Michigan may be big into hockey relative to the rest of the US, but that's not saying much.
