NHLPA agrees to realignment proposal

  • I'm not sure why the actual leagues and such are less expensive. They are, but I am not sure of the logistics. The biggest thing is the equipment costs, though. Because of the large demand, there is a large supply. There isn't a large demand here and the equipment was hard to come by and often marked up by pro shops because they knew you couldn't go anywhere else. It's a big reason I think they have trouble growing the sport here. It's looked at around here as something only rich kids do. Like it's friggin polo or something.

I'll agree, but why would Detroit try to label itself as Hockeytown, when it (hockey) is only 3rd in popularity in the city. Just dumb to anyone outside the fan base. Loved a lot of players that wore a Wings jersey, but can't stand the team or much of its fan base.

    You're just jealous, Jan.

  • Looking forward to Seattle getting a team. They're making sure the new arena can do hockey too so it should woo a franchise or expansion bid pretty quickly.

What happens to their current team (Thunderbirds?) and do they use the same arena?

Sorry, man. He's an integral part of hockey history, and has his name on a trophy. It's gotta be right.

I don't know if they'd "upgrade" the Thunderbirds to an NHL team so to speak. They play in a smaller suburban arena in Kent. Think Compuware in Plymouth. The new arena for the Sonics will be downtown and will support hockey. The state kicks in more money if they get a hockey team too so they have a vested interest to get one.

Good info, as for the Birds, I was wondering more if the city could still support them. Doesn't Everett have a team? They might just go away, no? Dont think Tacoma Is far enough away to move without stealing revenue from the NHL club.

Illitch started the arms race that brought the NHL to its pinnacle of popularity. He continued to spend and he won more Stanley Cups. It wasn't until the induction of the salary cap that he has been hamstrung into spending the same amount as two bit franchises with fickle fans.

No, Lansing. Well... DeWitt at first. Only skates I ended up finding were at the pro shops at the Summit and The Arc (when it was called that). Played for a bit but only in town because the sport is too damn expensive here and couldn't afford travel and all that. Ended up playing lacrosse as an alternative (National Sport of Canada for those trivia buffs out there).

    Thought it was curling..... confused
