NSIAP - Jamar Samuels official story

  • Jamar Samuels didn't get to play in his last game because he was wired $200 a few days back to help feed his family. Good going NCAA.

Report: Jamar Samuels ineligible due to financial benefit

Team's second-leading scorer out because of issue that athletics director said arose in the past 24 hours.

  • That kid's selfish act really hurt his team. I appreciate the spin they're trying to put on it, but really it just doesn't make any sense.

  • I give the AD credit. I have respect for people that honestly do their job. Yes, the rules are severely outdated. The NCAA needed a make over five years ago.

Rules is rules. Even if those rules are fucking retarded.

    God I hate the NCAA.

  • I know i'll come of as cold, but here's my take:

There are a ton of college bball players who come from homes that are not exactly "affluent." The kids have intentions of making it into the big time, and a lot of them know it will take care of their families. However, the process says they pay their dues by playing college ball. You do that and play well, an NBA contract is waiting for you. If your family has financial problems, they're the same problems they had before you started playing. Parents would have those issues if their kid decided they weren't playing college ball, and instead earned a 4.0 GPA. No one gets paid for that, so they have to wait, same as everyone else.

I know that's rough, but that's the reason for the rule. Samules' family needs to realize taht.

You are 100% correct. How heartwarming that the one person in his life concerned about him "feeding his family" is his AAU coach that will later pimp him off to an agent and collect his commission.

  • In comparison, the benevolent Ed Martin was only trying to help out a few young men (who also happened to have crazy NBA potential talent - not that it was a factor) coming from dire situations with a few hundred thousand greenbacks and look how the NCAA took no prisoners by hammering Michigan's program.

Yes, rules are rules. Oh, never mind.

Maybe a follow up story is in order where this AAU coach provides us with a list of all the kids with no D-1 hoop ability that he routinely wires food money to.

This is quite an assumption, especially about a player who will not be drafted by a NBA team and will very likely play overseas. He might make decent money, but I would exactly offer a kings ransom to his agent.

I am leaning to this kid need a few bucks and he called his old coach. As Spartan in PA stated, I am sure the coach knew it was against the rules. But if this kid was interested in being bought I am sure he could've gotten a grand or two from a booster or something.

This is "quite an assumption" that the only impermissible benefits this kid is taking come from his loving and caring AAU coach.

The kid got $200 from his old coach shortly before he could receive all them money he wanted from the coach without it being an issue to the NCAA. Maybe there is more there, I don't know. But if there are only a couple wire transfers from a coach in DC to a player in Kansas, then I think this is quite innocent.

You do understand what AAU coaches are, don't you? You do understand how guys like Calipari "recruit" don't you? If you think any of this is "innocent" you are a very naive person. Again, provide me a list of all the hungry kids with no hoop ability that this coach helped out and then I'll reexamine my position.

The AAU Coach has a prior relationship with the family. So if a family friend was willing to give him a few hundred dollars to help feed himself, then there would be nothing wrong with it. But he plays basketball so

Why wouldn't he just give the money directly to the mother then? Seems that would have been an easy way to avoid breaking any rules.

That was my initial thought. i'm assuming his mom or parents were there for the games? and then when the won the first realized they didn't have enough money to eat through the weekend...why not send the money to the mom? she can give her kid whatever she wants to.

pretty shitty situation, and while I understand the rule was broken, this is hardly the spirit for which it was created.

How many hungry kids with no hoop ability would this guy actually be in contact with? He coaches AAU, most of the kids he has some type of relationship with probably have some abaility.
