That kid's selfish act really hurt his team. I appreciate the spin they're trying to put on it, but really it just doesn't make any sense.

I give the AD credit. I have respect for people that honestly do their job. Yes, the rules are severely outdated. The NCAA needed a make over five years ago.

I know i'll come of as cold, but here's my take:

There are a ton of college bball players who come from homes that are not exactly "affluent." The kids have intentions of making it into the big time, and a lot of them know it will take care of their families. However, the process says they pay their dues by playing college ball. You do that and play well, an NBA contract is waiting for you. If your family has financial problems, they're the same problems they had before you started playing. Parents would have those issues if their kid decided they weren't playing college ball, and instead earned a 4.0 GPA. No one gets paid for that, so they have to wait, same as everyone else.

I know that's rough, but that's the reason for the rule. Samules' family needs to realize taht.

In comparison, the benevolent Ed Martin was only trying to help out a few young men (who also happened to have crazy NBA potential talent - not that it was a factor) coming from dire situations with a few hundred thousand greenbacks and look how the NCAA took no prisoners by hammering Michigan's program.

The AAU coach Malone said he didn't believe gift represented an impermissible benefit because of his pre-existing relationship with Samuels and his mother. He better than most knew this was not right. He just thought he would not get caught.

This is "quite an assumption" that the only impermissible benefits this kid is taking come from his loving and caring AAU coach.

You do understand what AAU coaches are, don't you? You do understand how guys like Calipari "recruit" don't you? If you think any of this is "innocent" you are a very naive person. Again, provide me a list of all the hungry kids with no hoop ability that this coach helped out and then I'll reexamine my position.

Why wouldn't he just give the money directly to the mother then? Seems that would have been an easy way to avoid breaking any rules.

How many hungry kids with no hoop ability would this guy actually be in contact with? He coaches AAU, most of the kids he has some type of relationship with probably have some abaility.
