Name a dumpier major airport than JFK

Amen. I couldn't believe what a clusterfvck that place was -- a handful of airline personnel standing around and a whole lot of confusion. I barely made it out of there.

I was really regretting choosing that airport at the time, but judging from this thread, my other options were even worse. Nice job NYC. pukeface

  • Agree with the earlier post re: DC - Reagan. But for funky mildew odor combined with roaches the size of small children, you can't beat Miami.

  • Add LaGuardia to the list. Basically all three major NY airports are dumps.

Agree with CDG and LHR being dumps too.

Airports out West are great, mainly because they're newer.

  • Paris-CDG catches hell from a lot of people and deservedly so (considering the partial collapse and associated deaths, etc), but frankly it's a walk in the park compared to some places.

Try spending a 10-hour layover in Nairobi. Mumbai is a close second, but at least a new airport is finally going up next door.

Brodson - I'll assume you're joking since the "new" Bangkok airport is fairly good. Much better than LAX, LHR, etc.

Agreed -- Terminals 1-3 are crapholes. Terminal 4 isn't too bad, though, and Terminal 5 (new one) is actually very nice.

  • Philly has been my pet peeve for years. The Delta terminal, however, is now open; and the temporary walls and chutes are finally gone. It's still not on par with the better airports.

I signed up for the Delta club thing so I can avoid sitting and waiting in general areas of Miami, Newark and similar hell holes.

Some great airports are DTW, Pittsburgh and Houston. The regionals are some of the real sleepers: Allentown and Wilkes-Barre in PA, for example. Omaha has agreat little airport. Even Tampa and Orlando are better than average.

Internationally, I don't fly as much as a lot of you or as much as I use to. I did, however, have to fly from Moscow to Sochi on Siberian Airlines last year. I will never complain about a domestic flight again!

Thing about the NYC airports is they serve the function...you show up, you get on the plane you leave. Or you arrive, grab your bags and go. How nice does an airport really have to be?

Completely disagree with this post. NYC should have the nicest airports for several
    reasons.

    1. It's freaking NYC
    2. So many international flights come and go from/to NYC. Why not make one of the busiest airports in the country set a higher standard?
    3. People "show up and leave" from all airports. Cleanliness along with up-to-date facilities should be just as important to JFK as they are to any airports

ABIA is a tiny airport, only 25 gates, but it is one of the best airports I ever been through. Clean, comfortable, and you can enjoy your time there with live bands or authentic Austin food.

JFK isn't even the dumpiest in NY. LGA sucks worse, at least as far as the United terminals go.

UAL has a few gates in the main terminal at LGA--and it sucks. That terminal was designed for 1960s aircraft and passenger loads and seems as like it hasn't been updated since. But now it accommodates probably three times as many passengers as it was designed to do. Really needs to be refurbished.

LGA is not a big airport, it's just really busy. I also think LGA itself has short-ish runways relative to bigger airports and cannot take planes bigger than a 757.

The USAir terminal at LGA is pretty nice, however. The Marine Terminal, where the Delta Shuttle departs, isn't great but it's nice to be separated from the rest of LGA.

The old "Northwest terminal" out of Reagan National. That's the only good part about Delta buying Northwest is that I no longer have to go there.

Although, I did fly Sun County last year on a direct flight to Lansing out of DCA and got to go back to that hellhole of a terminal for the first time in awhile. grumble

I love that terminal. Easy security easy baggage claim. Only thing that sucks Is getting there from metro.

Yeah, the US Air Terminal is nice and the Delta Terminal has just been renovated once you get past security and isn't all that bad. However, the Central Terminal is an absolute dump.

I agree that ambiance isn't that important, but you forgot a couple important steps that I appreciate the airport to provide:

    a) checking in yourself and luggage
    b) getting through security

I don't like worrying about whether sufficient airport operations are in place to allow me to complete a) in order to get to b). Thumbs down to Newark.

It is far away from everything and looks like you are going back in time 50 years. Also, there is nothing at all to do in that tiny ass terminal if your flight is delayed.

  • I was surprised how bad Maui was. Figured they had enough flights coming in and out of there plus no real weather related maintenance to worry about that it'd be super nice but it looks like they haven't touched the inside since the early 80's.

I'm just talking LaGuardia and JFK. Newark is a pain in the ass to get to from the city.

Never had much of a problem with a or b at both airports. They are very serviceable in those respects.

Relatively speaking the airports aren't that bad. Go stand on a subway platform and you'll see rats and roaches. NYC is a dump.

Don't judge a book by it's cover, I think the same holds true for cities. Don't judge a town by it's airport. DTW is a nice airport but Detroit is super depressing and a shit hole. NYC has dumpy airports but it's a booming metropolis.

Memphis....if you count that as a major airport.

It's horrible. It's also the most expensive "major" airport to fly out of in the continental United States. It's cheaper for me to drive to Little Rock or Nashville and take a flight that will have a layover in Memphis than it is for me to take a direct flight out of Memphis.
