Rob Deer is your least favorite Tiger, but he is a Baseball Stat nut's favorite as he is the model for the Baseball stats Theroy titled the "Three True Outcomes of Batting".
The three true outcomes of batting are the only 3 outcomes a batter can have where only he and the pitcher affects. They are walks, strikeouts, and home runs. Deer was very proficient in all three of these categories.
I think it was his 1991 season stat heads all study because he had a .179 batting average in 448 AB. Despite this, his OBP was .314, and his slugging was .386. He had 80 total hits and an amazing 175 K's. Of those 80 hits more than half were for extra bases (41/80). He also walked 89 times. Meaning he actually got on base more by taking 4 balls than by hitting...and had more than 2x as many walks as he did singles.
He set a records that stand today. 95 more K's than hits, most RBI for a player batting under .200, lowest average for a player who hit 20+ HR, and lowest average for a player with 400+ AB.
If he hadn't sat out 28 games he may have been the first ever 200 K in a season man. Mark Reynolds is the one who finally did that in 2008.
