The Stanhope one was Season 2, Episode 9. Ducking is season 2, episode 11.

    Great, thank you!

I know you're an expert in genetics and all (or stayed at a Holiday Inn last night), but there are many "actual Mexicans" who are white (obviously not the majority, but enough that it's not uncommon... especially in northern Mexico). Most Mexicans have some sort of European ancestry. Mexican is a nationality, not a race.

That being said, his father is the Mexican one, not his mother (you're right that she's an Irish Catholic from Michigan). His grandfather was a Hungarian Jew and his grandmother was a Mexican Catholic. His father was born in Mexico, and Louis C.K. was raised there.

Oh, and here's one of Mexico's most famous boxers, Saul "El Canelo" Alvarez (current WBC Light MIddleweight Champ):

My bad, should I have said Hispanic like everyone was thinking? His mother was not Hispanic. But wait, we define in the US anyone of decent from Mexico as Hispanic. What to do with the Mexican fighter? You knew what the hell I was talking about. He was surprised because he thought it was a darker skinned Hispanic from Mexico when in fact it was a pale skinned Irish woman from Michigan. Yes, there are pale skinned people across the globe. Yet not too many of true Mexican decent or even Spanish decent, I guess I should have simply said "no, his mother is of Irish decent" and left it at that (Is Irish a race? Dammit, I am screwed again). Happy?

His mother is Irish Catholic and from Michigan. His paternal grandmother is the Mexican Catholic. Obviously his mom lived in Mexico for a while, but she is not a Mexican Catholic. You need at least two people with some serious recessive white genes to make someone who looks like him (Irish Catholic and half Hungarian will do it). I doubt any actual Mexican mother has a child that is that white.

okay...i confused his paternal grandparents with his parents.

But his main point was that Americans have a very narrow view of what a "Mexican" is when in reality it's incredibly diverse - Especially in Mexico City where he was born. There are lots of euro-mexicans of every shade, but no one ever considers them "Mexican" because of their european ancestry. He's made some very poignant (and hilarious) comments on the nature of prejudice - again often mentioning guys like Mencia who calls himself a "beaner" - and uses himself as an example of how ridiculous it is to categorize someone based on their skin tone. He is, no matter what definition you use, Mexican. Just as someone who was born in the US and moved to Mexico at 8 would always be an American.

My doppelganger lol. Just this week I was asked for the one millionth time - "Have you ever seen the show King of Queens"?

On the specific Louie episodes that were mentioned (Doug Stanhope and duckling) - any idea which season/episode #'s they were?

I love when you sing "Levon."

  • Louis CK is top of the game right now. It's funny because he has been around for a long time but didn't "blow up" until the past 6-7 years. His observational humor is sort of like Seinfeld, but it's darker and he obviously uses more profanity. His show is awesome, too...very underrated.

I assume this thread is just for comedians who are doing their thing right now, in 2012. I enjoy seeing Steven Wright (the comedian, not the poster) on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and I always wonder why he just stopped doing comedy for a long time. He could have been a great, but he's just very, very good. Hell, Rickles is still funny as an old ass man.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

I actually saw Stephen Wright on the same trip I ran into Louie. He owns a house on the same island that my uncle owns property on.

Around the island he's known as something of a freak. He's an extreme germaphobe and a recluse. He isn't out in public often and when he is he often wheres a surgical mask. He also always carries his cash in a ziplock bag and only handles it with latex gloves . That could have something to do with him 'retiring' from performances.

The scary thing is, I get that feeling from Doug Stanhope. From the people who know him think that stuff can sometimes be close to the truth with him. The guy is funny as hell, but also troubled beyond belief. Many comedians are scared by him and the stuff he pulls.

Although the line "It's not your life, it's life!" is actually a pretty simple yet amazing thing to say.

That episode was amazing. It should have won an Emmy for writing. I've never seen anything on TV like it. If I ever have kids and have to talk to them about drugs / addition I'm just going to put on Requiem for a Dream followed by that episode of Louie.

The correct answer is yes. Louis CK is the best. No question.

I cannot fucking watch his show. I get so embarrassed for his character. Really uncomfortable. Embarrassingly so.

Made it through half of the pilot before I had to turn it off. I feel incredibly uncomfortable watching that my vag is sore.

I hate being a pussy like this but fuck that is tough to watch.

Louie is an amazing show. It's incredibly awkward at times, probably the most awkward moments I've ever experienced have been in that show, but sticking it out is worth it. Try again man, it might be the best show that's ever been on TV.

I saw Stanhope live last time he was in the Detroit area. He is on a different plane than everyone else. Absolutely hilarious and makes you think about his topics in ways you probably haven't yet. Sadly, I don't think we'll have him around much longer, cause he really is fucked up. I think the character in the Louie episode was him to a T, the only difference being the name.

  • Great thread. I agree, with most posters here, that Louis CK is on another level right now. His stand-up is brilliant and the show is the best 30 minutes of comedy TV I've seen since the BBC show, The Thick of It. It's already on par with Sienfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Its raining outside and the wife is out of town so I'm gonna spend the afternoon watching stand-up. I realized I bought the CK stand-up special he sold himself and never watched it. I'll start with that and then watch the Stanhope that's streaming on Netflix. Might move on to some old George Carlin after that. Probably make a tuna fish sandwich at some point too.

  • 2 things:

    1) It is a shame Chappelle isn't doing comedy anymore.
    2) I really wanted someone to mention Jeff Dunham, so I could get a good laugh.
