Nationals call up Bryce Harper

  • The Nationals have announced that they're promoting outfielder Bryce Harper to the Major Leagues tomorrow
Harper will take Ryan Zimmerman's place on the active roster and the third baseman will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Harper's service clock begins now, but the Nationals delayed his debut long enough to postpone his free agency by a full year.

  • Any success the Nationals may have will be completely illegitimate because they lucked into some high draft picks.

  • So when does he get to play, are they flying his ass out to LA to play this weekend from Syracuse? Nats have a home stand starting on Tuesday.

He's going to make his debut on Saturday, apparently.

I bet he doesn't get a chance to play until Tuesday at home. Either way I bet he bombs for this stint and will toil in Syracuse for 3 or 4 more months unless he gets called up for another injury.

  • Asked whether Harper would start for Washington on Saturday, Rizzo wouldn’t answer directly, saying that’s a question for Johnson.

But Rizzo did say: “We didn’t bring Bryce up there to sit on the bench. He’s going to get everyday reps and get ample at-bats.”

Lol, seriously? Almost every thread the Penguins are mentioned in will contain at least three variants of "yeah, well, they're only good because they sucked so bad for 4 years."

  • i thought this kid was a catcher?

ESPN has done an expose on every 1st rounder the nationals have taken since the team moved from Montreal....im still waiting on all of them to become the greatest player ever since the last player ESPN decided would be the greatest player ever

The Nats decided (as any team probably would have) that they don't want the kid behind the plate and taking years off of his highly paid knees.

I saw the kid play 2 games at Erie last August. He has all the talent in the world but a 5 cent head. He practically got kicked out of the first game (after he had 2 HR and a double) for arguing a meaningless call toward the end of a blowout.

Then the next day he got so hung up responding to hecklers in the outfield that he got late jumps on two catchable balls in consecutive innings.

This would only be a relevant post if it was in response to a Washington Nationals fan claiming that DC was really "baseball town" & that the Nationals had a prouder Franchise history than the Yankees.

They aren't going to send him back down. His replacements are a hitting somewhere around .100 right now, so they'll let him find his groove, since they aren't getting any production there anyway. I read elsewhere that he's been slow to start after each promotion, but then lights it up.

If he does struggle, the fireworks should be interesting. Cocky kid with a bad temper that loves to taunt opponents and indulge hecklers.

And if the Nationals went bankrupt 4 times because of awful bandwagon fans.

Man, Pittsburgh fans freaking suck. I hate that town so much.

Back to baseball...excited to see what the kid does. Nats' future is very, very bright. The friendly bet I made with someone in the winter is looking good right now ($50 that the Nats would be in the playoffs this year).

  • Every couple of generations you get a phenom.

Al Kaline graduated from HS in June, signed a contract and was the Tigers right fielder for 22 years.

Robin Yount was the 3rd player chosen in '73, spent a year in the minors and never looked back. Had 20 years with the Brewers.

Maybe Harper is as good as those 2 guys. It takes a special athlete to be able to hit MLB pitching before you are 20.

When did Willie Horton start playing for the Tigers? It was a ways before my time, but I know he was a local stud. Didn't the Tigers draft him #1 overall coming out of high school, and he was playing in the big leagues that year or something? Or am I way off?

Wille Horton was an undrafted free agent signed out of HS. He spent 4 years in the minors and had 2 short trips on the expanded roster before he made the 25 man roster.

I got to see the Tigers play the Brewers in the mid 70's. It was $5 Bucket Beer night. Horton backed up to the wall for a long fly ball. Some Brewer's fan dumped his bucket of suds on Horton while he made the catch. Willie climbed the wall, somehow got ahold of the guys arm and we thought Willie was going to tear it off before several Tigers ran out and convinced him to let go.

Sadly that was about the end of $5 Buckets too.
