Nationals call up Bryce Harper

  • GRR Spartan said...

Wille Horton was an undrafted free agent signed out of HS. He spent 4 years in the minors and had 2 short trips on the expanded roster before he made the 25 man roster.

I got to see the Tigers play the Brewers in the mid 70's. It was $5 Bucket Beer night. Horton backed up to the wall for a long fly ball. Some Brewer's fan dumped his bucket of suds on Horton while he made the catch. Willie climbed the wall, somehow got ahold of the guys arm and we thought Willie was going to tear it off before several Tigers ran out and convinced him to let go.

Sadly that was about the end of $5 Buckets too.

    Thanks for the info.

That is an awesome story! I hope someone has a clip of that somewhere.

The Nationals have announced that they're promoting outfielder Bryce Harper to the Major Leagues tomorrow Harper will take Ryan Zimmerman's place on the active roster and the third baseman will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Harper's service clock begins now, but the Nationals delayed his debut long enough to postpone his free agency by a full year.

They delayed his free agency clock, but not his Super 2 clock. Hence why most players like him are called up in June.

This move may have cost Washington $10 million.

Harper is legit. Youtube his high school home run derby.

Exactly. That's why Drew Henson is on his way to Cooperstown. High school home runs.

Henson isn't on the same planet as Bryce.

Double A pitching must be too slow for him to hit well. You do understand how ridiculous talking about a high school derby is in regards to his ability to hit MLB pitching?

  • Strasburg on the mound and Bryce will play, might have to watch the Nats Saturday night:

"I'm going to put him in left field and let him play," manager Davey Johnson said while mentioning he will bat Harper seventh for the final two games of this series at Dodger Stadium. "Harp had a great spring training, he's a phenomenal talent, and he's been swinging the bat down there. But we have a need here for a left-handed bat, and he's the guy that fits the role. As far as I'm concerned, he's earned the right to get the opportunity."

Any success the Nationals may have will be completely illegitimate because they lucked into some high draft picks.

  • LA crowd currently chanting "overrated." I hope it is directed at Harper and not Strasburg.

So far, Strasburg has been overrated. Yes, he's still damn good and will likely get even better, but DC seems to place the most ridiculous expectations ever on their athletes. RGIII and Harper, take note. No one can live up to the ridiculous expectations.

I can't place any blame on Strasburg for his elbow injury. If he played all of last season(his second) and pregressed as he was doing at the end of year one he would easily be considered one of the best pitchers in baseball, or at least hardest throwing.

  • Nice double straight away center off the warning track. Hit on a trajectory like Micky Tettleton.

  • Just threw a laser to get the guy at the plate but the catcher dropped it. I haven't seen him play before but so far I'm impressed with the discipline at the plate and arm strength.

I already hate him for the unnecessary helmet rip off. I'm getting the feeling that this kid might end up being the Lebron James of baseball.

  • I know it is a small sample size, but this kid looks legit. Right now!

Jackass or just immature, he plays hard and smart. I have been most impressed with his plate discipline. You don't see players, let alone 19 year old kids, with such good approaches. Then of course, he has great bat speed and power, too. And for a converted catcher, he looks pretty solid in the outfield--obviously his arm is beyond plus but his routes have been a little shaky at times.

He just may live up to the hype.

He showed all the tools when he scored from 2nd tonight on a sharply hit ball that bonced off of the SS, he was at full speed and rounding 3rd when the ball was missed and got home a step behind the ball...Smartly he knocked the ball out of the catcher's hand. He almost (like missed it by a few inches) his first home run on a fast hit long fly ball after a great appearance at the plate tonight, ended up getting his second RBI double instead.

  • Bump, kid hit a blast out of deep center at Fenway tonight...then later in the game put himself in a rundown between 1st and 2nd.

PS Strasburg is on fire with 13 Ks through 6 innings, his last probably was low and Youkilis got ejected arguing the call. lol
