Nebraska to become UM's 2nd biggest rival. MSU to 4th

That is not an alibi. It is self-loathing.

I'm gonna take that as disrespect. Come on, lets go red wings?

OSU/Michigan is a football rivalry. It's probably the biggest in the entire nation, but it pretty much ends there. However, both schools care so much about football and so little about everything else that OSU is probably still their biggest rival overall. MSU is 1a, 1b, and 1c though. Notre Dame is #3.

    "5. Michigan vs. Michigan State
This might be the most important Legends rivalry for the next several years.

Michigan vs. Ohio State will always be big and it’ll always define the two programs, but Michigan-Michigan State is meaner, nastier, and now, more important. It’s already a good Big Ten rivalry, but it’s about to get a whole lot bigger and a whole lot better.

Michigan’s date with MSU is a division battle, while the Ohio State game is just as important as facing Indiana or Purdue. Think of it like Oklahoma vs. Nebraska when the Big 12 was formed. There was plenty of excitement when the two played, but the OU vs. Texas rivalry became far more important because of the significance to the South.

Michigan is No. 1 in the 2012 Scout.com recruiting rankings and on the verge of being a superpower again under Brady Hoke, while Michigan State has established itself as a star over the last few seasons after winning a piece of the 2010 Big Ten ."

  • There's even one post that thoughtfully explains that currently, our game with them is more important and has bigger implications(B1G race, division and what not) and it was apparently downvoted to "flamebait" and is hidden from view. Even after acknowledging that the OSU game was always historically much bigger. They desperately want to deny that things are much different now.

And I will admit that follow UM closely. They are our biggest rival and i despise them. You all do. And they despise us. All of them. Whether or not they all feel that MSU football is a bigger rival than OSU, one thing is assured is that it burns them up more than absolutely anything that they can't beat us right now.

I agree. Michigan has lost so much to OSU lately that the anger has turned more into sorrow. Losing to State is still relatively fresh, so the anger is definitely there.

actually, it seems that ANY post suggesting that MSU is a rival at all is downvoted nearly out of existence.

I actually love this way of thinking they have. It's blatantly clear that it's all a desperate attempt to convince themselves otherwise of what they know to be true.

First, I love how he is "unsettled" by the rumor that we are their biggest rivalry. In the words of their esteemed former coach, "get a life," it is only football by the way no need to be "unsettled." Also, the "Ohio" thing is so childish and contrived. I wish they understood how foolish it makes them look.

Finally, they can think what they want. We can be #11 rival in the B1G alone for all I care. As long as we keep beating them and winning the B1G I will be pretty happy with the state of things.

This, they get off by the misconceived notion that beating them makes our season. That our one true aspiration is to take down Michigan regardless of what else we accomplish. Maybe true in the JLS days, but in the words of coachd "times have changed." If we go 11-1 with a loss to Michigan, go to the B1G championship game, and follow that up with a rosebowl or NC, the season is a complete and utter success. If we go 1-11 with a win over them, it is a complete failure. Period. I dont know that I want to beat them as much as I don't want them to beat us so they have to shut the f**k up for a year (even though they shouldn't be talking when they beat us anyways cuz hey, we're not a rival). In the MD era, the Michigan game is important because he understands the importance of being the dominant team in the state, outside of that a win over scUM is just another tally in the W column on our way to the B1G CCG.

  • The only reason I hope Ohio State wins that game every year is because each time Michigan loses, the competitiveness argument loses more credibility.

"Oh, MSU isn't a rival. It's not competitive. So what if they beat us four years in a row."

"Ohio is our biggest rival. Yes, I know I forgot the 'State.' We're Michigan! So what if they beat us 7(?) years in a row."

    It literally makes no sense.

This makes me wonder if putting the two teams in opposite divisions will years from now, really cool down the rivalry. MSU vs. Michigan will have huge B1G implications every year from now on if both teams sustain their upward trajectory and maintain success while "The Game" will be based pretty much just out of history. As younger generations take hold, they won't have personal experience with why there is such a bitter history between OSU and UM.

  • Well one thing I do know, the Ann Arbor/Ohio State game will have no say whatsoever in who wins the Big Ten Championship this year, or have any bearing on who goes to the Rose Bowl.

I actually have been amused by this as well...take this board for example: Pretty sure about 5 games this year have been deemed week to week as "about the most important of the Dantonio era"

    ND/OSU/Wisky/UM/Neb/Iowa

6 actually. All for various and differing reasons, even if it's just to dispel the notion that we can't show up in big away games(Iowa).

However, i will concede that the UM game this year was the most important; huge, in fact. To let Hoke walk into East Lansing in his first year and beat us would have been a nightmare. Crushing recruiting impact.

This year it was definitely more important. I agree 100%. It is tough to get most, I'll say "traditional mindset" (but you can say ignorant), Michigan fans to admit that though because they don't want to. It is what it is i guess.....

I turned you from a 1* to a 2* with my upvotes. It's almost as if scUM had offered you a schollie and you got another *.

  • Looks like a lot of Michigan fans are jumping all over the OSU thing to kind of legitimize their current program. OSU has been so successful that by saying they have such a big rivalry, it makes them bigger than they have been. Makes sense though. Michigan fans are there because they are insecure little pin heads. So many of their fans are complete morons. They need that reinforcement that they are important.

Even that one guy in the thread saying "MSU fans can't afford to live where I live" is kind of like the Wal*Marters. The Wal*Verines cheer on Michigan because they are good and the Wal*Verines want to be important. They have shit jobs, no life, and live just above or at poverty. The "rich guy"? He needs to cheer on a big time program because in other areas of his life, he is a loser. He may be monetarily successful (or not sense he's bragging on a message board, if you're rich, why waste your time?) but that guy still needs a winner to feel a sense of worth. He measures himself on material things. Sad really. Enjoy LA bud. Not any of us MSU grads could afford LA.

Getting back to the rivalry stuff, there is no doubt OSU and MSU hate UM for a lot of the same reasons. Arrogance, hype, annoying fans, and everything that Michigan represents. I just see UM fans hating OSU more than MSU because of the importance of the game. That same importance that has barely existed over the past 20 years. How many times have UM/OSU both been on the verge of a Big Ten Championship? I can think of '06 but not much else. That is what their rivalry is built on. Today, you have a bunch of butt hurt UM fans that don't want to accept MSU as a rival because they want it to be like the 1970's and 1980's again. They won't admit it but "The Rivalry" is falling fast.

  • I love the reasoning like this offered on their board:

"Sparty is UM's rival in the same way Gary Oak was your rival in Pokemon Red version. You kick his ass most of the time but he's still a douche."

Seriously? A Pokemon analogy? I mean, I knew they were nerds....but come on! lol

"Leave the gun.....take the cannoli" "It's not your job to be as confused as Nigel."
