No idea about "competitive balance," but the eye test seems okay...the West may be better top to bottom (just seems to be a bigger gap between top and bottom in the East), but there's 2-3 teams in the East that would be every year contenders too.

  • I like the Lakes/Plains idea, but the problem is always going to be that due to competitive balance concerns, there will be teams that are more "Lakes" geographically than "Plains", and vice versa. Who cares. It's better than East/West which would have the same problem.

Douchenozzles like Dan Dakich will rant about it during a game either way. "Gee partner, Nebraska is in the Lakes division, but I didn't see any water when we flew in this morning!"

Just restructure the divisions geographically and give them East/West names. This Lakes/Plains, Bo/Woody stuff is garbage.

Why let geography play a part with today's travel budgets? I would rather have them balanced and named Ren & Stimpy then unbalanced divisions based on geography.

I bet they don't even change it for when they go to 16. It's almost a 6 now.

Exactly. We could be in the Giant Douche or Turd Sandwich division, as long as we don't play OSU every year.

There's a weird thing about trying to create "balance" in the divisions. It's almost impossible to predict who will be good in 10 years and can completely backfire. Look at Wisconsin as an example. They were horrible in the 80's and got really good in the 90's and 2000's. The ACC tried to engineer a Miami vs FSU championship game with how they set their divisions. It's never happened. After the JLS and Bobby debacles, no one could've imagined that MSU would be one of the top dogs for an extended period of time. The only way to have "balanced" divisions involves constantly resetting them.

True but schools with 100,000 + seat stadiums and the biggest budgets in the league rarely stay crappy for extended periods. Coaches come and go, but the stadiums and the $$ remain.

How about: Red/Not red. Illinois can be considered red since orange is close enough to red and there are 6 red schools.

I have brought this up in the past, except I think Maroon is more red then Orange is red.

Red : UW, NE, Indiana, RU, UMaryland, OSU, UMINN

Not Red : MSU, UM, NW, Iowa, PU, PSU, ILL

Except, the B10 wants to optimize the east coast TV sets, so I don't see an alignment that doesn't have RU/Maryland/PSU and UM in one division.

    my 2cents.

Because the reason Maryland and RU were added was to optimize east coast tv sets, so PSU and UM have to be in the same division as RU and Maryland.

Personally, I think it would benefit MSU recruiting wise to have the east/west alignment as they could continue to recruit Ohio and Penn.

What does going to a talent poor state like Iowa or NE do for MSU?

Keep the current except flip Illinois west and add Rutgers and Maryland to the "other division".

Many of the posters here don't want to play Alabama twice, but are willing to back a division where we play OSU every year, for the sake of geographic integrity ? .....I don't get it.

The trouble I have with it is I don't even know what division MSU is in. Are we Leaders? Or Legends?

I'll bet 80% of MSU fans don't know the name. We may know the teams, (Nebraska, UM, etc.) but not the name.

It should be broken up geographically, and have an East/West Divisions. K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid)

I only kept track because the word in SCum's fight song is not the division they, or we, are in
