No more "Legends" or "Leaders?"

  • Meh, they were starting to grow on me. As long as they put UM and OSU in the same division, I don't care what they name them.

There's a weird thing about trying to create "balance" in the divisions. It's almost impossible to predict who will be good in 10 years and can completely backfire. Look at Wisconsin as an example. They were horrible in the 80's and got really good in the 90's and 2000's. The ACC tried to engineer a Miami vs FSU championship game with how they set their divisions. It's never happened. After the JLS and Bobby debacles, no one could've imagined that MSU would be one of the top dogs for an extended period of time. The only way to have "balanced" divisions involves constantly resetting them.

I disagree. There are schools that will always have great football programs (UM, OSU, PSU). I don't want to be in a division with all of them.

  • How about:

OSU, PSU, UM, Nebraska, Wisconsin, NW, Iowa

MSU, IU, PU, Minny, Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois

The Cisco Division and All-State Division.

It will gives us more money to buy a few more teams in the ACC.

more likely Farm Bureau and RoTel

  • These are completely fair and balanced

    MSU
    Indiana
    Minnesota
    Purdue
    Illinois
    Iowa
    Maryland

    UM
    OSU
    PSU
    Rutgers
    Nebraska
    Wisconsin
    Northwestern

Are we talking about the same PSU that just got hammered by NCAA sanctions? What if I had told you in 1990 that in a 3 year stretch starting in 1994 both Wisconsin and Northwestern would make the Rose Bowl. You can't predict who the bottom feeders and mediocre teams are going to be. Just look at MSU's own history if you want to see a roller coaster.

They are looking for balance over a 20-30 period not just any particular 3-5 cycle.

Yeah but these will likely change in the next 3 years when we add two more teams.

Flip OSU and Northwestern. I doubt UM and OSU would agree to be in the same division, and I believe MSU fought pretty hard to have NW in our division given the strength of the Chicago alumni base.

And that becomes a problem. Miami was a doormat in the 70's and became a dominant team for the next 20 or so years. You just never know with these things.

but they don't know those teams are. You can only plan based on what you have now.

That's my point, I'm saying make it good and competitively balanced now, don't worry about 20 or 30 years because it will change in 3 to 5.

Once we're at 16, then look at long term solutions.

Sure there are exceptions. but look at the Top 10 teams from any of the past 4 decades It's not just some random reselection every 10 years. The odds are there is going to be much of the same core group throughout.

I think it needs to be geographical or something that allows you to logically what teams are in a division. Leaders and Legends was so generic that it made things way too confusing.

On top of that, the words are similar (both 2 syllable plural words that start with an L). It still takes me a few seconds to remember which is which.

The biggest reason for going to divisions was to create a title game. Like it or not, for TV ratings sake the ideal matchup for that game would be some combination of UM, OSU , PSU and (maybe) Neb playing. You decrease the chances of that matchup by putting 3 of those 4 in the same division.

    WBill19542

  • On a side note Gary Bettman announced that no matter what the Big Ten renames the divisions the Detroit Red Wings will play in the West.

Yeah, good thing Nebraska played this year, sure was an upgrade from the year before.

The game was tainted this year by having a 3rd place 5 loss team one of the participants. Then the game was a blowout. You don't think an OSU-Neb game would have had more people tuning in, at least at the start.
