OT: 2 MPH Under = $90 fine?

  • I found this interesting. Doesn't the speed limit apply to both lanes? I don't like the folks driving slow in that lane either, but c'mon.

"The driver, who didn’t want her name used, told NBC Washington she was driving in the left lane of I-95 in Laurel last Friday when she was pulled over and cited for failing to move right. According to the citation, she had been driving 63 mph in a 65 mph zone."

  • It doesn't sound like she was fined for going to slow. Sounds like she was fined for driving in the left lane when she wasn't passing. Stay Right, Pass Left.
I know people who have gotten tickets for driving in the left lane when no one was around. The speed doesn't apply.

Good for the cop. It's not a non-speeding ticket, it's a failure to yield in the passing lane ticket. On I-95? Going slower than the speed limit? Are you kidding me?

Interesting. I just found this site (reliable?). They label Michigan as "weird".

  • One of my kids attended MIzzou. After his graduation, we were driving his car back to Michigan on I-70 between Columbia, MO and St. Louis. Relatively light traffic and my son was driving 3 mph below speed limit and had just passed a semi. So we were in the left lane just below the speed limit (no cars behind him) as he was approaching another semi to pass a few minutes ahead. A Missouri state cop with lights a-flashing started coming up to us and my son pulled into the right lane to let him pass. He pulled behind us and then it became apparent he was pulling us over.

We pulled over and the VERY YOUNG officer said he was travelling too slow for the left lane. When I asked if he was impeding traffic, the officer said NO, but still should be in the right lane. I said I agreed, but if not impediing traffic and a semi imminently ahead to be passed, wasn't it safer to stay in the same lane. And wasn't it safer to travel at or slightly below the speed limit? And that if people in the left lane were above the speed limit and those in the right lane at or slightly below, aren't those in the left lane in violation of the speed limit?? And since it we were driving above the legal minimum, AND THAT HE JUST ADMITTED WE WERE NOT IMPEDING TRAFFIC, that there was no violation here? Amazingly, my son got off with no warning or ticket!!!

My son wanted to KILL me as he for sure thought the cop would bust us big time, but I was very calm and asked my questions is a very innocent tone and we moved on without incident. But did stay in the right lane much more thru Missouri after that!!

Cited for failing to move over, not for speed. The left lane is for passing, not for driving.

I wish cops wrote these tickets more often.

  • I see the uniform vehicle code applies to the rate of traffic vs. the posted speed limit. Makes a lot more sense when putting that into context.

    The Uniform Vehicle Code states:

Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...

Note that this law refers to the "normal" speed of traffic, not the "legal" speed of traffic. The 60 MPH driver in a 55 MPH zone where everybody else is going 65 MPH must move right. Contrast Alaska's rule, 13 AAC 002.50, allowing vehicles driving at the speed limit to use the left lane, and Colorado rev. stat. 42-4-1103, prohibiting blocking the "normal and reasonable" movement of traffic.

    This.

Every time a semi decides to pass another semi if the road is only two lanes, that also needs to be a ticket.

On a 4 lane expressway, this is illegal in any state in the union. Left lane is only for passing. Unless you live in Texas, this law goes unnotice I say 90% of the time.

The problem with these truckers is that most of the fleet trucks have a governor that limits their ability to "put the hammer down" for a quick pass. Thus, if the truck they are passing is going 59 mph and the second one wants to pass, he can only pass at 62 mph (assuming that is what his truck is governed at). Makes for a very long pass and it pisses everyone off in back.

It is those dickhead truckers who should just fall in line between the slower trucker when there is a lot of traffic.

Somebody give that cop an award!!

    1) He was kind and let the slow-poke go -- which is more or less good since the slow driver was being an a-hole, but not harming anybody

    2) He did a public service to everyone else on the road by getting that slow-as-molasses driver the hell out of the left lane

    3) Even though the people filming it didn't seem to understand what that was all about, hopefully he educated a few others on correct lane usage, and hopefully the message sticks!

True enough, but some states/areas are better than others. After driving in the Seattle area for the last several years, I can't tell you what a fresh breath of air it is every time I'm back in Michigan.

Michigan drivers are quite simply, a superior species. The evidence is just too much to refute. A far, far, far greater number of drivers in Michigan use the left lane for passing, a small percentage of them at least are aware of the convention of using your left indicator to politely request the left lane (and those that do, generally honor it), and they have a much more balanced attitude towards speed, safety, courtesy.

Washington state drivers are idiots! They have *zero* concepts about lane usage, the only people who ever do anything intelligent with lane usage (using, or requesting) are from other states, being courteous is an excuse for them to idle away and burn gas at 4-way stops signs while having a cup of tea, and driving above 55 mph is automatically reckless and unsafe to them even if you're on a straight segment on a 3-lane highway with no cars adjacent, dry weather, and a 60mph speed limit. Gaah!

It's actually 65 where it happened with traffic usually doing 75-80. You have to try to get pulled over on that stretch of I95 lol
