OT: 2 MPH Under = $90 fine?

  • tJYD said...

On a 4 lane expressway, this is illegal in any state in the union. Left lane is only for passing. Unless you live in Texas, this law goes unnotice I say 90% of the time.

It's already been covered that no, you're wrong.

It doesn't sound like she was fined for going to slow. Sounds like she was fined for driving in the left lane when she wasn't passing. Stay Right, Pass Left. I know people who have gotten tickets for driving in the left lane when no one was around. The speed doesn't apply.

This. Why are people getting confused as to WHY she got the ticket? The speed she was going is irrelevant. It's about damn time people started getting ticketed for camping out in the left lane.

True enough, but some states/areas are better than others. After driving in the Seattle area for the last several years, I can't tell you what a fresh breath of air it is every time I'm back in Michigan.

Michigan drivers are quite simply, a superior species. The evidence is just too much to refute. A far, far, far greater number of drivers in Michigan use the left lane for passing, a small percentage of them at least are aware of the convention of using your left indicator to politely request the left lane (and those that do, generally honor it), and they have a much more balanced attitude towards speed, safety, courtesy.

You're kidding, right? You must not drive on the west side of the state. I pass idiots camped out in the left lane EVERY day, and usually give them a good glare when I pass by on the right. Despite the "KEEP RIGHT / PASS LEFT" signs that MDOT has put up along I-96 and elsewhere, people here still don't have a clue. Some days I feel like running these dumbfucks right off the road.

I do think Michigan is better than most. But, just like every populace... you got your morans.

You seem to get really worked up over this.

You are correct...I am. It's my biggest driving pet peeve in life. I sometimes start convulsing in pain after I've passed someone on the right and they continue to stay in the left lane for miles and miles with no other cars around. Seriously...I want to run those god damn idiots off the road, pull them out of their vehicles and choke their necks until they understand what they are doing wrong.

Ok, I feel better now. biggrin

  • This is truly great news. Screw her and every other slow person in the left lane who won't get the hell out of the way.

  • This is why I love driving in Europe. You check your mirror to make sure someone isn't doing 120 behind you, signal, move to the left (unless England, then the right), pass quickly so you don't get run over, then slide back to the right. It's not complicated.

You're certainly right about that -- I generally spend most of my time in Lansing, Ann Arbor, Troy..

Add to that, there's morons everywhere; even in those areas. Just an extremely low percentage of morons compared to Seattle.

I feel for you man.. It took some time (years) for it to stop frustrating me.. what helps me is remembering that not everyone even has the capacity to be a good (or even decent) driver, and sometimes drive ignorantly, because they are ignorant (or even terrified) drivers.

It's still annoying when a perfectly capable and aware person is trying to make a statement in the left lane though. I just work around them and move on now. There's 3 of them for each mile of highway in Washington so I'd blow a gasket if I let it get to me..

Have you ever driven in Wisconsin? If so, you would be happy to get back to Michigan. Slowest drivers I've ever seen.

Interesting. I just found this site (reliable?). They label Michigan as "weird".

Ha, because that is a legal or technical term.....

The problem with these truckers is that most of the fleet trucks have a governor that limits their ability to "put the hammer down" for a quick pass. Thus, if the truck they are passing is going 59 mph and the second one wants to pass, he can only pass at 62 mph (assuming that is what his truck is governed at). Makes for a very long pass and it pisses everyone off in back.

It is those dickhead truckers who should just fall in line between the slower trucker when there is a lot of traffic.

Try going north on 75 through Kentucky around midnight. Those truckers will run you down doing 100mph...no kidding. So f'n fast it's scary. Those boys are hell bound for glory.

It's actually 65 where it happened with traffic usually doing 75-80. You have to try to get pulled over on that stretch of I95 lol

I did. Was doing well over 100 though, on my way home for Chistmas.

Officers of the god damn law and myself are not exactly on good terms, but hats off to this one. This needs to be happening every fucking day all day. It amazes me the fuckers you see constantly slow strolling in the left lane. If I saw cops pulling these selfish fucks over constantly I'd go donate to FOP or whatever right the fuck now.

    Fuck The Police though.

  • Betcha rural New England tops that. I've passed people while still going 5 mph under the speed limit. Just Hazel and Ethel heading to the General Store.
