OT: Anyone picking up Battlefield 3?

  • Anybody have a group going for PC? I just started and getting my ass kicked because I'm so behind everyone else...but I really enjoy the team aspect of BF3 and all of the previous ones. I'm on the West Coast, play mostly engineers and a little recon.

  • Are the extra maps worth buying? Just got the game a couple of weeks ago (first one of the series I've played) and wondering if people think it's worth it. xbox gamertag: HumbleJester

They are good...Few old Battlefield 2 maps and a Battlefield 1943 one. (Nostalgia'ed hard at first) The new weapons are nice but nothing that is better than the main unlocks. I'll toss you a friend request on xbl. There's rumors of an April 1st DLC pack along with a HUGE patch coming out next month.

IMHO, they are very good (and not just for nostalgia's sake).

If you have the Special edition which I think everyone has they should be free. Presonally I like Gulf of Oman and Wake the most. Sharqui or Sharkie as I call it is one i am not crazy about espically the condensed version. I did get 27 kills there the other day though.

On Xbox the "B2K" is included in the first major patch. If he had the Limited Edition he wouldn't be here asking if he should buy it. The LE was only available for launch, it's pretty tough to come across a copy of it now that hasn't had the online code used.

  • Thanks for the responses. Just got B2K yesterday and it's nice not getting booted off servers every time they load one of these maps. I also think it's funny that after finally feeling acquainted with the BF3 maps I now have 4 new ones to give me that "running around and getting shot before I even figure out what I'm doing" feeling lol

  • 3 DLC scheduled this year. Next one is in June with a close quarters set of maps. The fall DLC sounds like it will have at least one all armored vehicle map (biggest they've ever made). And this winter another project called "End Game". No news as to whats involved in the latter.

No news as to the release date of the "February update".

Does Premium give you the exclusive weapons upfront or do you unlock them?
any other good guns come with premium?
Is Close Quarters up and running? Worth it?

I'd like to get Premium, but my experience with COD Elite was less than stellar - I regret it. same crap was still crap. I'm back on BF3 and although I'm not that great, I have decent runs and have fun. (still can't fly a jet or copter worth sh*t.) It sounds like you get more items and extras (guns tags knife camo) than you did with CODElite, which might sway me.

Are you playing on PC/PS3/Xbox? I'll say this: Armored Kill looks to be the best DLC that's going to be released thus far. Case in point:

Edit: you don't get them automatically, you have to do team oriented tasks to unlock them. (Heals, revives, spotting people, ammo resupplies, etc).

You unlock them via Assignments, so like another poster said getting revives, tossing out ammo and kills will unlock them.

Looks like when the Armored Kills comes out you will have access to the vehicles right away.

Can anyone explain the HD that comes with Close Quarters?

Sure; it involves micro destruction (i.e if you shoot at a column, pieces of it chip away) and also destruction similiar to what you'd see on Strike at Karkand/Gulf of Oman where some(but not all) of the buildings collapse. On close quarters however, at least in my experience, you and your squad have to constantly be moving, otherwise it's really easy to get pinned down with no where to go.

This guy did walkthroughs for all the new maps yesterday. Very tame destruction compared to all the other "stock" maps. no holes in walls, hit one with a rocket or c4 and all you see is whats inside the wall. The destruction is limited to tables, glass, and particle effects when a wall is hit with a bullet.

  • Anyone play since the update? Sounds like they changed the M26 which is good. Also glad they fixed the L-96. I thought I was crazy about the firing being off-centered lol

Also does playing in HD make a big difference? I never downloaded it because I don't have an xbox hard drive. Is it a bit of a handicap or not really a big deal? I'm probably going to get a hard drive soon but just haven't gotten around to it.

Random pointless question- Why aren't there dog tags for the scoped .44? It's the only gun I've noticed that doesn't seem to have any sort of proficiency dog tags. I'm not actually concerned I was just curious if there was a reason.

I have. They fixed the M26 (it functions more like a shotgun now, which was what it was supposed to do in the first place) they made ECM Jammer more reliably distract heatseekers/stingers(though it's not 100%, it's usually dependent on if the chaff cloud is between you and the incoming missile), some of the recoil on the guns has also been tweaked. Also, Javelins aren't OP like they once were, it depends on where the javelin hits your vehicle. There's a few other fixes too that I can't think of off the top of my head.

In regards to HD: It helps, but if you've been used to playing without the textures, it's not a huge deal aside from the improved visual clarity.

The .44 scoped doesn't have dogtags as far as I know because I don't think DICE considers them to be different weapons aside from the scope unfortunately. Wait, are you a sniper that uses a .44 as your sidearm?

I actually don't snipe very often. I generally only use it on Damavand Peak while defending in rush for the first two bases. In those instances I use the L-96 to watch the hills and the .44 scope to headshot anyone who tries to arm an M-COM. Don't worry, I'm not that idiot sniper running around metro with my .44 out lol. I am however very unversed in hand guns (this was my first Battlefield game and I only just started using my sidearm regularly) so if you have any recommendations I'm open to trying new stuff. As far as class/guns go I typically go assault or engineer class with a Famas, DAO-12 or G36C.

If you play assault, and you want a gun that does a lot of damage, try the G3*, but it's fire rate is slower. A well rounded gun is the M416 and the KH2002* (keep in mind it's burst fire or single shot only though). The AN-94 is okay, but the recoil takes some serious getting used to.

In terms of side arms, the Magnum does the most damage, but the fire rate is slow; if you love revolvers go for the Rex*; almost the same damage, but faster fire rate. The MP443 and the M9 aren't bad if you need more than 5-6 shots to get the job done. If you really want to be a jackass and overkill someone with the pistol, the G18 is the only way to go.

For Engineer: the G36C is a good carbine, so is the M4A1 and the AKS-74U. The SCAR does the most damage, but it has the highest recoil and the smallest magazine size.

The DAO-12 is a good shotgun, but it's primary benefit is that you can stop the reload halfway thru and continue firing if someone comes near you. That being said, reloading that shotgun from empty takes a LONG time, especially if you're on a map like Operation Metro. Try the M1014 when you get a chance. It's semi-automatic like the DAO-12, it only has 7-8 shots, but it's a hell of a lot more lethal. The Saiga is okay as well if you can get used to it's firerate.

If I were starting again, I'd probably go with these loadouts depending on the map and the type of engagements I'd encounter:

Assault: M416, ACOG (4x), foregrip, flash suppressor for no muzzle flash, or silencer for reduced recoil and the added bonus that you don't show up on the minimap when you shoot or kill someone. (Silencer also reduces vertical recoil on your gun, but increases bullet drop at distance due to the slower velocity rounds). Heavy Barrel is a good attachment to use if you think you're going to be shooting people at a distance; the recoil is a bit more vertically, but the rounds don't drop off as much due to the fact that they're higher velocity. If you're primarily going to be playing assault with Close Quarters engagements, use the F2000, FAMAS, or the AEK-971 if at all possible. Red dot sight or holographic sight may work just as well, it just depends on what you're comfortable with.

Engineer: M4A1, foregrip, heavy barrel, ACOG(4x). I always run with heavy barrel as engineer, because what's the point in hiding when you have a rocket launcher to blow up things? Pistol preference for either class is relative, you just need to figure out what gun works best for you. Optional gun I'd use is the SCAR.

Try one of the loadouts and see if any of them work for you. By the way, what rounds are you using in that shotgun? Buckshot? Flechette? Frag rounds? Slugs?

Edit: * = co-op weapon that you can earn by playing the co-op missions.
