OT: Comcast Sucks

  • Has anyone eise had terrible experiences with Comcast? How does AT&T compare? I might be switching soon. (I've had Comcast for less than a month)

tl;dr - Comcast internet sucks, screwed up my bill, comcast is taking advantage of students in East Lansing

I moved into my new townhouse Aug. 26th. Roommates and I decided to get Comcrap and made an appointment for them to come set up our internet/cable on the 28th. The day before, we went and picked up our boxes and installed them ourselves as they would have charged like 10 dollars extra per box. The day they were supposed to come (between Noon and 3) they never showed up. So our cable and internet wasn't working. We called them at 3:15 and the lady said that they did show up and turned on our service, they just didn't let us know they did it. We were home all day... no one came. She obviously lied to as our service wasn't working so she said she'd have a service man out the next day.

He came, checked everything out, and told us that no one did show up the day before. (Even though we were assured that someone did come) and said we should be getting service sometime that day as his boss needed to enter in our cable boxes codes or something. Well that never happened. We called and complained again, were assured the people would be out the next day. Nope, didn't show up. We flagged down another Comcast guy who was working on a place down the street. He swapped out our boxes and got it working.

We were promised that we would get $40 off our next bill for the inconveniences + free HD.

We get our bill and they charged us for their first visit (where they never came), they charged us for the second visit (where the guy just came and didn't do anything except say his boss needed to do shit), and they didn't give us our 40 dollars credit.

To top it all off - when we initially called to set up our service they lied to us about the cost of the services we were getting. They gotta know that I live in a student heavy area so they were just going to lie to us to get our money.

Oh, and the internet sucks. Its spotty as shit. We go for a couple hours a day where it just doesn't work at all. (Like right now - only Facebook and this website is loading)

  • lol you're on an anti-Comcast rampage right now. I do agree though, they are awful. I'm so glad we don't have to deal with them this year in my new apartment.

My internet was spotty as fuck last year with Comcast, so annoying.

  • I've had AT&T Uverse for 3 weeks and they are sending a technician out for the 6th time tomorrow since my service is out...AGAIN. It's like amateur hour over there, don't do it.

  • We got basic cable with free hd and internet. ~$70 a month. (I guess we get what we paid for, that's pretty cheap) Right now, our bill is double that.

Interesting. Why can't there be a decent internet/cable company that has good customer service. It can't be that hard can it?

I think it's a regional thing with Comcast. Here in DC I've been pretty damn happy with Comcast. First I got them to basically extend my trial offer indefinitely. Well, almost. I had premium service for $60/month for first 12 months, but then when that expired and they wanted to jack me over, I had them knock it down to slowest broadband, cable and sports package for $70/month. Not too bad. About once or twice a year, if I have service issues, I make sure demand concessions and they usually bend over pretty fast. For example, last month, I got a $44 credit because the sports station that carries the Orioles (not that I care about the worst team in the AL, I just like watching baseball) was all jacked up.

Friend of mine in Arlington has Comcast and he's had free Extra Innings all summer because he was having service issues with Comcast and asked for a free month of Extra Innings. They said sure...and never turned it off. So he's been happy with being able to watch the Tigers all season.

I guess with Comcast I'd advise:

    1) Always let them know about service issues
    2) Remind them you can switch to a competitor
    3) Demand monetary concessions. All they can do is say no.

U-verse is working great less than a mile from you. Only real problem was that it took awhile to get it installed and the router has to get restarted every once and awhile.

This is the only thing I miss about the dorms.

  • We switched from Comcast to AT&T eventually and i don't think it was worth it. The internet is bit more reliable but there's no decent On Demand and our AT&T ended up being really damn expensive after they reamed us with a bunch of hidden fees after our 2 or 3 month trial ended. I also found AT&T's scroll menu to be effin' dumb.

    All Ages Shows

  • I actually don't have a ton of problems with Comcast. Can't remember the last time cable TV went out. Interenet went through a phase of sucking but then we password protected our wireless and it's been basically fine.

Honestly not sure why/how people have so much trouble unless they go into every phone call with a service person loaded for bear.

  • I have had both and I have found ATT to be superior to Comcast in terms of speed, cost, and picture quality.

  • My advise: get Fios if it is available in your area. Great service, good prices, insane amounts of HD, insane internet speeds.

  • I've gone from Comcast to DTV to UVerse. The service/outages have gotten progressively worse, so far. upset

    bulldogg

  • Yes!!!!!!!!!!

I hate them SO much and vowed to never, ever use their services again if I have any other choice. I currently have AT&T Uverse. Theyre ok overall. Comparable tv picture quality and internet speed imo (or at least close enough that I did not notice a difference) and way cheaper. Recently, though, I have been getting choppy tv footage and pixelated screens every now and again so I am hoping it is a temporary problem and it passes soon.

I have a friend that used to work for Comcast and he told me that all their money is in advertising for new customers and they do nothing in the way of customer service or trying to help out customers they already have. Makes sense when I look back at all the time I spent on hold and the fact that when I did talk to a Comcast rep I knew more about computers than they did!

  • I have AT&T right now and I'm not too pleased with them at the moment. My advice would be get the employee ID number of every person you speak with, take notes on what they say, and write down when you talked with them.

Apparently you can't have more than 4 different channels on in a house at one time. For instance, I live in a big house (9 rooms) and we have 8 TVs, but they neglected to tell us that we can't have more than 4 different channels running at once. So, let's say that 4 TVs are on and one is turned to ESPN, one is turned to MTV, one is turned to Discovery, and one is turned to HBO. If a 5th TV is turned on the person must either watch what one of the other 4 is watching or (and this is messed up) they have the option to kick one of the other TVs off their channel. However, not once during the 6 times that I spoke with them before our cable was installed did a single person mention any of that even though they knew we were going to have 8 boxes. In addition, they haven't given us the sport package that we ordered. Oh, and it took them 3 weeks to come install it after we ordered.

And the company structure is so messed up that the people in the store can neither see nor fix what anybody over the phone did. So you have to deal with them exclusively in the store or exclusively over the phone. They don't have overlapping systems.

    We're thinking about cancelling.

  • Ironically the TV service through Comcast has been perfectly fine. Its more of the crappy internet and customer service that I'm upset about.

Interesting point about the structure of the company - we are going in store tomorrow after we've talked on the phone with a bunch of hooligans.
