OT - Cordless drill recommendations...

Do I need the Dewalt or will a Black and Decker do? Do some small projects, but will be hiring out the major stuff. What do I need?

Black and Decker is a waste of money. Dewalt or Makita last for years and can take some abuse

I have a porter cable, I highly recommend them. Great quality at a good price. Charges fast, lots of different torque settings, and is lighter than my old Ryobi. Makita also makes great products.

I kick in for a Makita vote. However, BayCityGreen's comment has me second guessing. Nothing worse than having a battery crap out with no recourse but to buy another one.

Milwaukee makes a great tool. As does DeWalt. I've had good luck with both.
Both were also stolen.

This. On top of the warrenty its just a good drill. Most of them are smaller than the competition of similar powers....makes them more versatile.

I have a Porter Cable. I hate it. The chuck sucks. It's constantly loosening on it's own. The impact driver that came with it is fine.

Real happy with the Hitachi I got last year. They can be had cheap too if you find a good sale.

Great info. Thanks to the OP for asking a question I needed answers to, too.
Here's another: Is it worth it to spend the extra $$ for the newer, smaller batteries (I think they're lithium ion or something close to that)?

Here's another tip, Milwaukee is the only one left made in the USA. Bosch and Hilti (though I doubt a homeowner would spend the dough on a Hilti) are made in Germany. The rest, for the most part, are Chinese made Garbage.
EDIT - Craftsman may be made in the US too, but i'm not 100% sure.

if your going to use it a lot, you pretty much need to get dewalt. If its a random around the house fixer type of tool, just about anything works.
Also, buy the new batteries, I think they are XSP? Ive been super thrilled with mine wince i got it, they hold a charge like twice as long

I have a Milwaukee and love it. I got a kit that included a drill, driver, and a recip saw. I hardly ever use the saw, but use the other two all the time. They're both very compact and strong.

I have a 18V Black and Decker that I matched up with a cordless trimmer so I could swap batteries. I have beat the Hell out of the drill and it continues to work great. I have built shelving throughout the garage, workbenches, and finished off rooms in my basement with it. I have a Dewalt corded drill for heavy duty stuff like drilling through cement or if I fail to plug in my chargers. Eventually I will upgrade to a Ryobi Lithium cordless drill/trimmer/hedge trimmer when my batteries stop holding a decent charge and throw my old stuff in a garage sale.

12v is fine for household stuff. 18v is for projects like building a deck or putting up a fence.

$220 for this kit that come with 2 drills. They are only 12v but they are lithium ion so they are powerful and charge crazy fast. I just finished 800 sq feet in my basment and these were the only drills I needed. The hammer drill is nice but a 12v hammer will die quickly. The impact driver is AMAZING! As the tension gets tighter on screws you are driving it will start with the impacting which make a huge difference. I was able to drive screws without pre-drilling and had no problems. The impact driver was more powerful at driving deck screws than my 18v craftsman drill. (by the way guy at home depot told me not to get impact driver cause it is for mechanics. He was stupid)
These are also part of a Milwaukee system that all use that battery. I also have the multi tool and it is really useful.

Just don't get a Dewalt, they burn out in no time. Kinda like the North Face for drills, getting by on their name and churning out less quality by the year.
