O/T Foods from the MSU dorms that you miss.

Cheesy Chicken Clam Chowder They had Prime Rib and Snow Crab for resident appreciation day once Anything from Homestyle @SnyPhi or Brody The Sushi at Brody is solid They got pretty good at making plain chicken breast near the end of my dorm stay

I totally forgot about their Clam Chowder, it was pretty damn good. They would always get pissed at me for taking a bowl from the cereal and filling it with chowda instead of using those tiny soup cups.

  • The elegant Monte Cristo sandwich.

    Manhattan Green

  • I miss "Soul Food" day.

Also Shaw's deli wrap counter. Spinach wrap for the win.

The burgers were always decent in my opinion. I used to put roast beef on them for post-exercise meals.

I also enjoyed the omelets you could order.

And Caf 2 Go was amazing. I used to load up on those Uncrustables PB&J sandwiches.

Overall I honestly liked most of the dorm food. It was pretty solid, and there was always enough variety.

My only negative experience was finding a giant cockroach in the mayonnaise tray one time. Disgusting.

Caf 2 Go was awesome. I was always surprised more people didn't do it.

Rice month was so depressing. They already served rice with every meal....Now they dedicated a whole month to it and did 2 or 3 different kinds of rice with every meal.

Anyone remember the Presidential Chicken? Never really understood what was so presidential about it.

the presidential chicken was not very presidential and I'm pretty sure it was not even chicken at all.

Whats Caf 2 go? is it sort of like what today is called combo exchange?

Soul food day was awesome, but I always felt it was disrespectful to serve fried chicken, black eyed peas, collard greens, cornbread casserole, and watermelon just because it was MLK Day.

Didn't mean the food wasn't good.

This. I know from 2000-2004 (when I was their) it was caf 2 go. By the time my wife got on campus in 2006 it had changed its name to totally take out. New name but same concept.

  • TTO was amazing. Those kids nowadays are missing out. I ate like 10 soft pretzels a week, plus many nachos.

I miss the wing dings and chicken tenders, especially in Hubbard. Say what you want about that dorm, the caf was huge and they had a great variety of food. Not to sound like a gay (NTTAWWT), but their salad bar was legit too. All those dressings...

  • Late '80's Case Hall -

1), 2), 3) Stromboli. So good they only served it once a trimester.
    4) Chili Freetos
    5) The unwritten rule that you could leave the caf holding an ice cream cone. This applied to no other food items for some reason
    6) Make your own waffles, weekends only
    7) The fake scrambled eggs for breakfast. Somehow I grew to like them.
    8) Capn' Crunch Crunchberries

Yup, I was at MSU from 2004 to 2008 and I think the change happened between the 2005 and 2006 school years.

I think the Shaw version saved my life when I had swine flu. I could barely move and my roommate used food and drink from there to make sure I didn't starve or die of dehydration.

Caf 2 Go was basically a little "to go" room attached to the main cafeteria. You could pop in and out and get your meal and take it somewhere else, so you could watch TV or go to class or whatever. They weren't in every dorm. For example, I lived in Wonders but had to go to Wilson for Caf 2 Go. I think that was the only one on South Campus.... They had different options than the main cafeteria too (for example, they always had pizza) and different Caf 2 Gos had different menus.

Not sure what the equivalent of that is now.

Definitely sounds like Totally Take Out from my day (2005-2009).

  • They have Combo exchange now where you can go to like Sparty's and pick up a drink, sandwich/microwavable meal, and a snack for free, once per day.

Or you can use it at like Sny-Phi and its pretty much carryout

  • They used to have a dessert with graham cracker crust with some sort of pink...stuff in it. Man it was good. We just called it pink stuff.

    Inglewood Jack

  • The wrap station at Shaw.....I would fill mine up with everything, pour chipotle sauce all over it, and grill it.....damn those were good. Owen had pretty good jambalaya, too. The burger station at the revamped Sny-Phi was pretty sweet, too.

I remember doing the same thing! Man, a lot of memories coming back reading this thread. Those holiday dinners were awesome.....steak and crab legs, I would usually skip lunch those days, and just load up. I remember once someone at our table brought in a universal remote, and kept turning the movie off they were playing. The cafeteria people were pretty confused, it was awesome.

  • Pasta bar at Case 2009 was the bomb! Holden's salad bar was nice for something light, Brody's food was awful other then a few specific items and Lafayette square was pretty good too!

Except that one of the full-timers who ran/runs it is a Walverine and it wasn't uncommon for him to be singing the Michigan fight song while working.

  • For me, back in the 80's in Holmes Hall.... the salad bar rocked...was always an option, actually discovered ranch dressing there... I liked the chicken sandwiches...once in a while I will go retro and get some at Gordon Foods just to satisfy the craving.... Icecream Sundays on Sundays was really good too.... helped me put on my freshman 20 pounds..... But the Johhny Mazetti, was just, well...lets say I do not miss that.

  • I was in the dorm in 93 and the food was shitty outside of the special dinners. Most meals were cereal and then we would order a pizza around 9.

A dessert favorite was Charlie Brown ice cream.

I guess there should be good food now since room and board is trouble what it was when I was there.

  • In the late 70's Wilson served a square patty of ground lamb with mashed potatoes and gravy. It was excellent, despite
biting into a patty one time and discovering a shotgun bb

    The Pantry

  • 85-88, Holden, Shaw, and Phillips. I loved the cheese cake. Not too firm, not too soft. I ate a ton of that stuff!

EDIT: The Prime Rib - we would eat plate after plate and build a huge pile of fat and gristle on a plate in the middle of the table which we affectionately called the "gut pile". Ah, memories...

Lots of memories eating pasta with you in case.

Totally take out was the name from 05-09.

I'm going to toss in the matzo ball soup during passover. It shouldn't have been good, but it was the best I've ever had.
