I've owned a handful of Strats before purchasing my first Les Paul in 89. My Strats never came back out of their cases again. I eventually sold all of them. For me, nothing can match a Les Paul for tone, quality, and playability, but it is so much personal preference. I always hated the thinness of my Fenders' sound and the cycle hum from the single coils. Even with a humbucker, I could never get the sound I wanted. About a year ago, though, I went on the hunt for a Tele with the new 'no hum' electronics - I always liked the fatter of the tele necks. Mostly, though, I'm adding a tele because my old ass can't stand for 2 hours with a LP strapped on to my back. I'm like a cripple for a couple days afterward.
To make a long story longer - my advice is to buy one of each. Vintage if possible.
