OT: My God.... Radiohead is terrible in concert...

  • fingergun

Saw Radiohead tonight in Glendale. One word to describe the show: AWFUL

I'll start off with the positives: 1) we had great "seats" - general admission floor, we were able to make it fairly close to the stage; 2) got nice and boozed up in Westgate (which is terrible) prior to the show; 3) although I generally do not like the newer material, it actually sounded pretty good live - I was impressed - and the overall sound was incredible for an arena; 4) lights and video were also great - Radiohead had a bunch of square "plates" suspended from the ceiling (they moved up and down) with video on each one of the plates that focused on the band members, the lights were also great, visually it was awesome...

Now what made the show suck - (on a side note, I've seen Radiohead I think five times - saw them for The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A / Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief, and now): Radiohead played almost all new stuff. And although, as I stated above, some of it sounded great and much better live than on the record, there was just way too much of the new stuff and not enough of the other material mixed in with the show. That was the biggest issue I had. For well over half the show Thom Yorke was just dancing around to jungle beats like he was at a disco. It was awful. Some of the songs sounded great, but overall it just got really old and ultimately became boring. I was just standing there, bored out of my mind, checking out hipster chicks.... then I went to get another beer and the fucking venue stops selling alcohol at 9.30 p.m. - WTF??? So by the end of the show I think Radiohead played two songs from OK Computer and one song from The Bends and they finished with Paranoid Android. But by the time they started playing Paranoid Android I had already tuned out and I didn't even care.

Seriously, you guys have a shit load of albums, mix it up a little. Thom Yorke actually said something like "we're not looking toward the past, we're looking toward the future" sometime at the beginning and I had a feeling that they weren't going to bust out with much, if anything, from "The Bends" (one of my favorite all time albums) or "OK Computer" or "Pablo Honey."

    Fuck, just so disappointed.

You've seen them a few times, don't they do this every tour? That's what I've heard at least... that they usually just play stuff from their album they're touring for and maybe throw in one or two songs from previous records.

  • Were you on drugs? I've heard that they can greatly enhance Radioheads overall enjoyability.

More importantly, when you stopped at Wendy's on the way to the show did they have plenty of pepper?

Don't most bands do this? When they put out new material and go on tour you have to expect that going in. The op should have know better.

  • I enjoyed the concert when I went. I hadn't listened to Radiohead in probably about 10 years, but I had fun. Then again I didn't have any expectations going in and I recognized a few songs during the set, I didn't expect to recognize much. Had a good time, got to meet a couple other Spartans who were able to take advantage of some extra tickets I had, so I can't really complain.

  • I saw them at Bonnaroo in 06. Overall I was impressed in their perfomance. Some songs like "Everything in it Right Place" blew me away others were pretty boring. I will say I am not a Radiohead guy and I think their fans completly overrate them. Very talented group, but no one of the best ever and I will take TV on the Radio any day.

I have a few comments to the OP. First, Im not sure how you got tickets. Maybe you scored some at the last minute for free or really cheap so you felt obligated to go. Your main complaint is the set list. Did you ever think about checking out what they were playing on tour before you invested some $$ and 2.5 hours of your life going to something that was "boring." Your concert was the 10th show in the KOL tour. Not the first or second when you would have no idea what the hell they were gonna play. You could have taken 4 minutes out of your life and looked up their sets and saw they are playing approx 90% of the same stuff EVERY show. Then you could have decided this isnt for me, not enough older material, and dumped your tix in plenty of time and maybe even make a few bucks. Go here next time...

Second, it sounds like you are a fan. I dont doubt that. So you should know that this band will never be a reincarnate of itself. Every 3-4 years they go in a slightly different direction with their material. Some changes are radical like Kid A, OK Computer and KOL and some not so much like HTTT and Rainbows. If you dont like their new stuff thats cool. I get it. Its not my favorite of theirs either. I saw them in Dallas and was actually rather surprised to find that I thought their live sound was better for the KOL stuff then what was recorded. I especially thought The Daily Mail, Mr. Magpie, and Little By Little were much better live.

We purchased our tickets online the day they went on sale, that's how we got the general admission floor seats. Look, I don't mind Radiohead focusing on their newer material, I get that - but come one, throw the real fans who've been buying their fucking albums for years a few bones now and then... they've got a ton of material, mix some old stuff in there too. Bands with as many records as they have should play for at least 2 1/2 hours and devote a certain percentage of the songs to the older albums, that's simply my point. Seeing Thom Yorke jump around like an ape just got old.
