OT: Pink Slime To be Used in School Lunch Program

  • Want some ammonia treated "meat by-product" with your mashed potatoes?

Pink Goop Beef Is Invading School Lunches: USDA Buys 7 Million Pounds of the Slime to Feed Kids

Remember our old friend pink goop? The crap notoriously in chicken nuggets and the filth that McDonalds right, the USDA has plans to buy 7 million pounds of pink goop beef for our national school lunch program

  • The US government is going to send agents in to inspect individual lunches of each child and then make the child buy some of this pink slime or chicken nuggets if the child has a bad lunch prepared by a parent.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution: Pink Slim...

On the Season Premiere of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution filmed in Los Angeles and aired on April 12, 2011, Jamie demonstrates how 70% of America's ground beef contains leftover cow parts (a.k.a. "pink slime") containing e.coli and salmonella that has been treated with ammonia. Ammonia treated meat can be found in virtually all conventional grocery stores, fast food restaurants, many national restaurant chains, and school cafeterias. The saddest part is that the USDA allows this ammonia treated meat to enter the marketplace and with no labeling requirement on the packaging to inform the consumer that the meat their about to buy contains ammonia, thus hiding the truth and pulling a wool over the consumer's eye. This is certainly a rude awakening to the majority of Americans that don't know where the meat in their fridge, the meat in their conventional local grocery store, the meat in their fast food hamburger, and the meat in their restaurant made hamburger comes from. How do you avoid this poison? Buy beef that has come from grass fed cows, which can be found at natural and organic grocery stores and your local farmers market. No matter the size of your town or city, grass fed beef (real beef) is not out of reach. Unlike ammonia treated beef, grass fed beef is clearly labeled and contains no ammonia.

  • Ammonium Hydroxide is GRAS(generally recognized as safe) by the FDA. It's not going to hurt you to eat food that is treated by it. People just freak out over chemicals.

Anyways, while the thought of this product is kind of a bummer, it's not unsafe and it probably saves a lot of money while not being wasteful.

For one thing, it's a ripoff. You pay for fresh ground beef and get a cheap substitute added in. The slime substitute is in 70% of ground beef.

The Europeans have long ago banned the import of US beef due to health concerns. But that is mostly over the hormones, isn't it?

  • What's the big deal? At least you know what it is, as opposed to those square grey mystery meat things they tossed at us in Brody back in the day.

I'm sure they had nothing to do with the PBB contaminated cattle the University was disposing of at the time.wink_msu

  • Is there any way to get ground beef that doesn't have that stuff in it? I want to grill burgers, but now that I've seen the pink slime I can't not think about it.

Go to Eastern Market and have a butcher grind meat for you on the spot.

ABC News covered the Pink Slime story last week over several days. A Costco spokesperson went on camera and flat out said they didn't use it because their customers expect better quality. ABC couldn't get comments out of most grocery retailers they contacted.

Of course, the Costco guy could have been lieing through his teeth, but for now I choose to believe him.

  • It's mainly connective tissue, not meat. Which is then given a chemical bath. And I am sure they add "flavor" to replace the flavor stripped by the bleaching.

  • This has also been discussed on the Wells board---part of Michelle Obama's failure with the school lunch program.

School lunch is the not the problem in childhood obesity, it is merely the only area that can be regulated and influenced by lobbyists. Individual Districts are making great progress in upgrading menus and incorporating fresh produce when feasible but you rarely hear about those efforts. Instead USDA creates a PR nightmare for Districts with "Pink Slime" type issues. Districts do not want the product but are pretty much forced to take it from USDA if they want to maximize their commodity allocations which they usually have to do to break even on their operations. If a District can afford to skip using the products made with "slime" they are eating the costs and buying unadulterated product.

New regs just came out from the USDA and they move the lunch program closer to what you describe, dictating even more what goes on the plate. Sounds great in theory to make kids take more veggies and fresh fruit but think about how you react when told what to eat. You may put it on the plate because your told to but are you going to eat it if you didn't want it?

True. I didn't read the ABC report beyond this article but it didn't say how much is in 70% of ground beef. If it consists of .1% of much of it, then technically they can still say that it's "in 70%". But the USDA should be a little more clear on this issue.

And yes, Europeans ban our beef due to hormones. They are pretty stubborn over such issues whether or not it's it deserves concern. They're the same way with GMO crops which causes trade problems as well.

Are you out of your mind? Watch the video. I don't have kids, but if I did...they wouldn't be eating that sh1t.

  • this is media overblowing and not understanding what is going on. surprised, aren't you?

there is no "chemical bath." they use ammonia gas to alter the pH to inhibit bacteria growth. all it takes is a small change to provide safety.

a big part of the reason it's being sold for human consumption is it allows the product to be sold for less. in these days where 50% of the population makes less than $20,000/year, a lot of people need to pinch pennies and it allows them to have a burger once in a while. oh, and wells.

if you don't want to buy it, just buy "ground _____", where the blank is a specific cut of meat, ie sirloin, chuck, etc. don't buy the plastic tubes of meat and you will be fine.

  • This, or if you have a big freezer, buy a 1/8 cow (or however much you want) direct from a good farm and ask them to grind some of it for you for burgers. I want to do this as soon as I get a bigger freezer. Anyone done this?
