This Is How Diabetes Swept The Nation : Shots - Health News : NPR

Back in 1995, about 4.5 percent of adults in the U.S. had been diagnosed with diabetes. By 2010, the prevalence had zoomed to 8.2 percent. An interactive map shows how much worse diabetes has become in less than a generation.

Yeah but if you take the UM coaching staff out of the equation, the numbers look significantly better.

Was diagnosed Feb 11, 2003. Happy belated 16th birthday gift. Most 16 year olds get a car, I got diabetes, or as I prefer to say, liveabetes.

Please don't make generalizations. Over-eating/too much sugar is not the only cause of diabetes.

You ever look around you at all the over weight people walking around? ...and, even more sadly, so many over weight kids.....so a diabetes epidemic should come as no surprise.

I would love to see the numbers if they took out the veterans exposed to agent orange.
Veterans exposed to Agent Orange are able to get disability benifits because the link between agent orange and adult onset diabetes is 600 times that of the average non exposed person. So while obesity is an issue and probably contributes, I would like to see the numbers with Agent Orange exposed Veterans removed.

I honestly think that the numbers - based on what was provided in the link - are still pretty high. Given the numbers, there is not a single state with less than 4% of the population with diabetes.
However, I would like to take your suggestion and also exclude most LADA (adult onset/type 1.5) and Type I patients. That leaves Type II growth, and while the numbers might still be high, maybe they would no be so damn absurd.

Ignorance is amazing.
Type 1 diabetes is also up 5+% annually and has nothing to do with weight/what you eat/etc.
