OT: Things to do in St. Louis

  • Ok, who am I kidding, let's go with places to drink in downtown St. Louis. I'm there for two nights this week for a work conference at the Hyatt Regency which I guess is relatively near the Arch and new Busch Stadium. Pretty much work conferences are a chance for guys to get away from their wives/families for a couple days. We're in class all day and spend most of the evening out at the bar, getting back to the hotel in time to get just enough sleep to survive the next day of the conference. Anyone have restaurant/bar suggestions in downtown St. Louis? Possibly looking for a steak place for Wednesday night.

  • Ruth's Chris is right downstairs! They usually run a deal for hotel guests.

The Hill is about 1.5 miles southeast with lots of great authentic Italian food...take your pick of neighborhood spots...Rose on the Hill is great.

Bars...Schlafly's Tap Room is good...a local craft brewery about 3/4 mile east.

  • Also, since you're a gambler, Lumiere Casino is within walking distance...not a bad place to get your blackjack fix.

Yeah, kind of figured we'd end up there at some point in the evening. Anyone know what liquor laws are in St. Louis at the casinos? Is it like Vegas where drinks are free if you're playing, or like Michigan where gaming laws require them to charge a minimum fee for drinks?

Also, I saw Ruth's Chris was right there, but I was looking for something local as opposed to a chain. I know Ruth's Chris is fantastic, but I can also go to the one in Troy any time I want. As for the tap room, I just checked out the website and I'm intrigued. I'll probably try to get some people to check it out while we're there. Thanks!

  • For the bar aspect, just take a stroll down Washington Avenue and take your pick. Just don't go north from there and you'll be fine.

  • The Anheuser Busch brewery of course is there, Clydesdales and all. There is a great place for lunch Train Wreck Saloon something or other, good beer and good food. Outside of St Louis in St Charles there is good food also.

Definitely go to Schlafly's for beer.

If you want a steak place try Mike Shannon's which is certainly local.

  • When we were down there for the Final Four, we ended up at Laclede's Landing and the bars were pretty cool.

We also hung out at the old train station and that was a fun time too.

This. Mike Shannon's has some great steak. Went there and had my doubts but it did not disappoint.

  • Thanks for all the input folks. I leave tomorrow morning and am looking forward to it. Haven't been there since the Final Four was there and I honestly don't remember much of that trip (lots of drinking away sorrows). I was also a 23 year old college kid and really didn't care about a decent dinner. I was mostly interested in drinking for cheap just to make the trip as cost efficient as possible. We did do the Budweiser tour. Definitely worth doing for those that haven't done it before.

Right, like I'll be able to remember which way is north after the drinking we usually do on trips like this. cheers

Why does it feel like you're the same type of person that won't hang out in downtown Detroit if you're not going to a sporting event??

Sure I would but you can still scope out your death bed. I've never been to St. Louis but is the organized crime high? I find it strange that a place like St. Louis has the 2nd highest crime per capita and 2nd highest murder rate in the country. I guess I just don't associate St. Louis with organized crime like New York, Chicago, or LA.
